I made a stick!

I took down some small ash trees a few months ago. I fashioned one into a walking stick for my wife. It's 58 inches. I took the nubs off with the bandsaw, took the bark off with a drawknife and spokeshave, added a leather lanyard and a couple of coats of tung oil. All total just a few minutes of work.

I’ve started on the next project. Gotta go get some more red oak!

What are you making? That untreated wood in your post, if you are going to treat it with something, can you post it again when finished, i love seeing the effects that different treatments have on different woods. Have a good week and stay safe and warm.

I’m going for a wall hanging display cabinet with box joint joinery. I’m still laying it out. Right now I keep going back and forth between no door or a simple rail and stile door with glass. Feel free to opine.

I like the look of red oak so I’ve about decided to just do an oil finish in it with no stain or dye. That way the oil and wood can naturally age.

Keep posting as you progress, i find this sort of work very interesting, and as i stated like to see the different effects of different oils and finishes. Handy to know for future reference.

The wife is decorating the house, and decided to go with shelves across the windows instead of curtains in our breakfast area (there are pull-down insulated blinds that are pushed up in these pictures). She bought the brackets, and I bought the shelving and cut it to size for her. Then she painted the shelves, and I installed them for her. Pretty simple project, and she is very happy with the results......and it gets a lot of her plants out of the way.
And Joshka approves.

We had a medium sized ash tree fall over (insect damage) in the back yard a few months ago. My sister had bought me a couple of old ball peen hammers at a garage sale for $1 a piece earlier this year. One is a Master Mechanic, and the other is an old Vaughn in need of a new handle. Vaughn has been around since 1869, so I don't know how old this one is, but based on the handle, I figure its at least 50 years old. I used the ash to make a new handle for the Vaughn. First time I ever made a hammer handle - took a couple of hours with a band saw, draw knife, spoke shave, and both a bench and orbital sander. I was able to save and re-use the wedges from the original handle.

Brilliant work. You cannot buy tools like that anymore. Well done.
PS. Good to see you resurrect this thread. Love looking at members wood work projects.

I also picked up a new addition to the shop last week, at an estate sale. Upgraded to a Delta table saw. Sanded and waxed the cast iron top, and she is good to go.

Very good job on that handle Mike! And I like that table saw too. I use a delta and really like it so far.

Nicely done hammer handles. That is a skill I am sadly lacking.
