Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

They were $60 at Magic Mart since they came out with the things in 2014. No one bought a one. Then, they dropped it to $45, again, no one bought a one. Towards the end of the closing sale of the chain last year, I got mine for $27; and it and another were the last Cases they had (would have bought both, but didn't have the money).

Two years ago, I got mine off eBay for $23 with free shipping. Thought it was a whale of a deal.

My advice: if you want it and can afford it, get it while you still can. After you've had it for awhile, ask yourself if you'd rather have the money you paid for it or the knife. if you're like me, the answer is almost always "the knife" because you can always get more money, but there's no guarantee you'll ever have another opportunity to get the same knife. I'm sure I don't have to remind you about the $100 Gray Bone 107W, do I? I still don't regret spending that much for it because I've only ever seen one other one like it for sale (and I bid on that one too, until it got up to $90). At least with the BIN price, you know you won't have to pay some outrageous amount to "win" it. And, if you really want to try to get it for less, you could always send the seller an offer...worst case, he rejects your offer (or flat out ignores you), and you can still buy it for his asking price...nothing ventured, nothing gained, as the saying goes. (In my experience, sending the seller an offer on a fixed price item works best if you are patient and can wait until about two or three days before the listing is set to expire.)

I will always bid on any and every 107W I see up for auction on eBay, even if it's one I already have. Sometimes I get lucky and end up winning it for less than I would have expected. That's how I manage to keep accumulating multiple identical 107Ws.

Like two of these Antique Second Cut Bone 107Ws--which I acquired by placing relatively low GIXEN bids that ended up winning. (Full disclosure: By "relatively low" I mean relatively low by OCD Monkey standards--which may or may not be anyone else's concept of how much is considered relatively low.)
P8160001_1.JPG
Now I have the option of choosing the one I like the most and selling the other two...or...keeping all three (because, as OCD Monkey is fond of saying, "You can never have too many 107Ws").

Sometimes I get lucky and get a bargain. Unfortunately, that was not the case with this Turquoise Bone 6207. Apparently I was not the only Mini T collector who wanted this baby, but I might have been the only Mini T collector who had an OCD Monkey doing the bidding. When OCD Monkey sets his sights on a knife, there's virtually no amount he won't pay to win it. At least this one didn't set me back quite as much as the infamous $100 Gray Bone 107W, but I still had to pay a pretty penny for it.

As OCD Monkey was preparing to incorporate the new Turquoise Bone 6207 into my Mini T collection, he suddenly realized that he had a previously unknown predilection for diamond-shaped shields.

To wit...
P8160036.JPG
At first, this discovery made him giddy with glee. But, his gleeful little monkey face scrunched up with consternation as it dawned on him that this newly discovered facet would require a complete overhaul of his storage organization system. After all, he can't very well have knives with similar shields scattered throughout the entire collection willy-nilly. Oh no...that just won't do at all. (There's a reason his first name is OCD!)

Looks like I'll be pulling an all-nighter...since there's no possibility of peaceful slumber until this matter is properly sorted out. (And, I just remembered there's yet another diamond-shield 07 still on the way.) ::tired:: ::yawn::

~Q~, you are a piece of work and I mean that with all due respect. I just last night added a Chinese Winchester Mini-T (cheap, cheap, cheap) to my pile of Mini-T's (won't be here until next week). Yes it's a pile because OCD Monkey would end up in a mental institution if he were exposed to my storage method. "Find a spot and stick 'er in."

Very clean looking Winchester, I like it.

An observation regarding yellow synthetic handles:
I find it curious that Case offers yellow synthetic handled 07s in more variations than 07s with any other single type of handle material--four, to be precise. You can get both a 107W and 207 in either SS or CV. I can't help but wonder why that is. ::hmm::

While we're on the subject of Winchester branded knives...I currently have four, all of which I believe were made in USA by Queen and I have no complaints about their quality.

These two Winchester 2904 1/2 Italian Jig "Big Minis" (3 7/8") both have excellent fit & finish and super snappy snap. Very solid, well-made knives, to be sure. I like the unusual geometry of the spay blade, as well.

The second one was another one of those "accidental multiples" I acquired by putting in a random bid that ended up winning. (If anyone would like to buy one, I'll give you a good deal on it...not quite as good as the deal jerryd got on his yellow synth Mini T, of course, but really good for a USA made Winchester...just drop me a PM.)

Here's a curious 07 I found on eBay. The pattern number tang stamp shows W207 SP SSP...which seems strange since there is no Wharncliffe blade; so, what does the W stand for? ::shrug::

This 125 yr. limited Edition 6207 with Roman Numeral Stamp & Shield is a MSMD knife that OCD Monkey has been pining for ever since jerryd showed his in this thread awhile back (thanks a lot, buddy!) Although patience is definitely not one of OCD Monkey's virtues, this time it worked in his favor and I finally got one. (I think I now have more Amber Bone 07s in my collection than any other handle material.)
P8250015.JPG
If you've been following this thread and paying attention recently, I think you can probably guess what attracted me to these next two new additions (Hint: it wasn't the spey blade!)
P8250011.JPG
P8250012.JPG
OCD Monkey is still trying to configure an organization system that incorporates the diamond shield sub-category...he keeps shifting knives between different rows in each case and whole rows of knives between cases; it's like trying to solve a flippin' Rubik's Cube (but at least he did manage to get all my knife boxes organized according to pattern number and date of manufacture).

As if the whole diamond shield obsession wasn't enough, I've suddenly rekindled a fondness for the badge shield as well. At this point there's no telling exactly to what level of insanity this will eventually lead.

jerryd, I hope you fared better than I did playing "Chinese roulette" with your yellow synthetic Winchester Mini T.

I'll be honest: for the $10.90 price of this Pacific Rim-made Winchester my expectations were already low enough to walk upright under a snake's belly; so, I wasn't too worried about being disappointed. I mainly got it for cosmetic reasons, i.e., I just liked how it looked. So, while I was not necessarily surprised by the extremely poor quality (the clip master blade has absolutely zero opening or closing snap and must be manually opened to full extension and pushed into the channel to fully close), I was very dismayed with the corrosion on the liners and scratches on the blades. ::disgust::

I know not all Chinese knives are such low quality, but it's precisely because of junk like this that I tend to avoid knives made in China as a general rule. This piece of shirt's going straight back to ecop! on the morning tide.

~Q~ I am so sad that you had a bad experience with the Winchester and with ecop!. I've bought a lot of knives from ecop! without a single clinker. Did I just get lucky?

Are you requesting a replacement or money back?

I, too, have purchased a lot of knives from ecop! and this is the first clinker. I don't fault the seller in this instance as I'm sure they got a large shipment and can't physically check each and every knife. It's just the luck of the draw. I have a few other made-in-China knives and none of them have any issues, so I think I probably just got a bad apple. We'll see if the replacement knife is any better.

I'm not saying my Winchester is perfect but the blades click and clack like they should. The only real problem is cosmetic. The brass liners are not finished properly. I noticed the same thing on yours.

For the price and the reason I got it, I'm not going to throw a fit and stomp my feet. It's not like it's the centerpiece of my pile. Now on that Tony Bose Case I bought, something like that would be a HUGE deal.

It's been years since I owned a Frost knife, in fact, now that I think about it, I believe it was precisely because of the Frost knives I owned in the past that I decided to quit bottom feeding and up my game. Got tired of guzzling rotgut swill and quickly developed a taste for finer spirits of a certain vintage and pedigree.

But then jerryd comes along with a nifty (and cheap) little Chinese Winchester that causes me to ponder if perhaps my "price prejudice" was purely pompous pretension and I ought to reconsider my disdain and reevaluate my elitist perspective.

So, I returned to my roots and picked up this very inexpensive (but not necessarily 'cheap') made-in-Japan Frost mini trapper. I'll be the first to admit that it's not much to look at (for some reason both Parker and Frost seemed obsessed with scorching knife handles), but the quality is really not that bad. It's all relative, of course, but this Frost Mini T isn't quite as "cheap" as I remembered Frost knives being...and it's definitely a few rungs higher up the quality ladder from the Chinese Winchester I got.

 Yeah, it definitely won't be winning a blue ribbon at the county fair and I wasn't planning on entering it into any beauty contests. Truth be told, I found it by accident while looking at sharpening stones. Even the ad copy on the packaging puts the knife secondary to the main item, the Washita stone. Hiding this ugly duckling in a "Gift Set" with a sharpening stone, oil and cedar storage/display block was probably the only way they could unload such an unattractive knife.

OK, that's enough "slumming", the Monkey has a voracious appetite that must be satisfied. The yellow Winchester was unpalatable and the Frost was unappetizing; the Monkey demands higher quality cuisine.

Time for some fresh fare...perhaps a serving of olives and millennium oysters to go with the Monkey's "whine".

What would Labor Day be without some kind of work to do?

I've got a job for you...Actually, it's more like an OCD Monkey riddle...But, solving this riddle may be prove to be hard work...It just depends on how well-honed your OCD skills are (yes, OCD requires a certain degree of skill, don't let anyone tell you otherwise! ::huff:: )

To solve the riddle you must first determine the pattern OCD Monkey saw in this particular group of Mini Trappers and why he arranged them just so? ::hmm::

Tell me, if you are able:
What knife should fill the empty space?

In order to maintain the correct sequence, if this one were put into the line up:
2016 Case 6207 SS Burnt Amber Bone
2016 Case 6207 SS Burnt Amber Bone
...it would have to replace this one:

Still looking for the Mini T that fills the empty space.
