First blade................complete.

Post by gmusic »

Well......................here she is!

It's 9 1/2" inches overall, the blade is 4 3/8" it feels real nice in your hand. It has a few issues, but it was a great learning experience. I honed an edge on it and tested it on this hemp rope. It made 25 cuts with no hesitation (and would have kept going but I quit there). I have store bought knives that go dull before 10 cuts!

There was also an involuntary test! I accidentally dropped the knife, and of course it landed tip first onto the concrete! You know how things go into slow motion during an accident??? As I watched it, all I could think was "you just broke the tip off!" To my amazement, it chipped the concrete....with NO damage to the tip whatsoever!

I'm pretty gassed. I think I'll go make myself a cocktail and celebrate!

Take care all..................

Great looking knife, Gary !

Couple of quick questions... Did you heat treat in the forge, or do you have an oven ? And, did you solder the guard, or is it a compression-type fit ??

Good work, man

Thanks for the complements guys! I appreciate it..................

Ringmaster.................The guard is soldered on (one of the issues). It was my first attempt at it and it didn't come out as good as I wanted. I think I have figured out where I went wrong. It was heat treated in an oven 3 times for two hours each time at 400F (Ed Fowler teaching).

Stagman..............I have always been a fan of William Scagel's work, and yes, Jim Behring does him proud! There is a Scagel knife (if it's authentic) on eBay now, it's up to $2,000.00.

Knifemaker...............#2 is on the drawing board!!

I'll be making knives in this style and possibly pattern a few after Jimmy Lile. Heck, I may even come up with something of my own!

Take care.............................

That's a beauty Gary, certainly a knife to be proud of. You're probably right about the silver solder, the low temp (4% silver) melts at 400F to 435F depending on whose stats your reading for the same solder (Stay -Brite). Likely one temp is a melt point - the other flow.

Beautiful first knife, looks fantastic - hang onto that one! ::tu:: ::tu::

Thanks Ralph!

There's coming a day I may have a couple for sale. Until then I'll be improving my craft by filling requests from brothers, cousins, in-laws and outlaws. Hell, they'll keep me busy for a year or more sounds like! ::tired::

Thanks again everyone.

That's why I quit building muzzle-loaders. Every time I got one built, they would wait until I wasn't home and go by and get it. I got DAMN good at it, but never got to make one for myself.

If your first one is any indication, you're gonna build some beauties.

Yes, you will be very good - Your relatives will be closer and make sure you get all the practice you need. ::sneaky:: The upside is that others will see your work that friends and relatives are using or carrying and that will get you sales. So, it ends up as being good advertising.

It looks great. I have only one complaint. I need more light to see it better. If this was your first they can only get better. The more you work them the more you learn.
