I got this letter yesterday from the VA saying some of my personal info may have been stolen and that they tracked me thru the IRS.
It just tells me to be aware of it and keep an eye on my credit report. But, then it says no financial or health records were "affected". It is not just a few, but says 26.5 million Vets and their families infomation was taken.
I have been out of the military close to 35 years. Has anybody else here received a notice/letter or know of this?
Thanks
Yes, I got one of these letters yesterday.
It's not the 1st time something like this has happened. A few years back in Phoenix, Tri-Care had data stolen that had veterans info on it, and I was notified then as well.
There are a couple veterans organizations filing lawsuits, one wanting $1,000 per vet who's info was taken. Doubt we will see that anytime soon!
I got the letter and thought that if SS# are involved, then can't finances be affected with identity theft? I'm not a "doom-sayer" or a conspiacy theorist, but I think it's funny how that employee took home work and got robbed the same night. And why the hell do they get to take OUR private VA records home with them????
I will tell you what I found out/read. It was either on msnbc.com or cbs news web site.
The VA knew about the records being stolen 2 weeks before they told anyone and now they think the employee may have been targeted. He/she had been carrying these records/discs around for several weeks also.
Congress is doing some kind of investigation and the head of the VA is on the Hot Seat.
The way I understand it, the thieves can open up credit card accounts, bank loans, etc....... with the info.
The VA has done me right in the past and with other Vets also that I know of.
This is/should be their Baby, not mine or yours.
BTW: I was able to open up a CD bank account/Free checking over the phone about two months ago. Last week when I checked my balance,
all they wanted was the last 4 digits of my SSN. All over the phone, except when I made the first deposit.
Talked with my older Brother this week-end. He lives in Maryland near Fort Meade. Told me VA was posting flyers offering a $50,000.00 reward for return of the laptop.
He said the thing was stolen out of the employee's car in a shopping mall
