Father's Day 1988

I gave this pocket knife to my Dad in 1988 for Father's Day. It has changed a little, he never did.

He is not with us anymore, but in a better place. That is him in the center....... ridin' around.

*EDIT: I changed a couple of these pictures around, they are protected by Copyright and he did not want the pictures published when he was here. I have been down Copyright road before.

We (Him & I) did talk about it. I do not mind sharing, but I get a little upset about Stealing.

Mine was gone 11 years before the gift of knife. You never get over it, you just get used to the empty feeling.

A real hero to have served in the mounted and motorized Calvary. Treasure the memories and pictures. Your epilogue by Jefferson is certainly appropriate. Happy Fathers day to all.

Thanks & Yeah, I know the feeling. He has been gone 10 years August and I still think of him daily.

He was career Army all the way. He went to every reunion until he passed. Every time he would re-enlist, he would choose a different MOS. I still have his boots, belt ( know the business end real well),and other items from the Army. I even have a picture of Patton walking around doing an inspection. He was with the 6th Cavalry when it was in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. near Chickamauga Battlefield (War of Northern Aggression), they move them to Fort Hood, Texas after WW2.

Fort Oglethorpe is now a city.The parade grounds, Church and some of the barracks are still standing. They also have a museum of the 6th there now also. I am going to will/donate all this stuff to them one day. I still keep his boots polished and on display.

He was the only guy who ever told it to me straight whither I liked it or not.

BTW: I was told a movie was made about the change over, do you know the name? He was with the 106th Machine Gun Group? for a short period
and never spoke of the change.

It could have been the 106th Recon Group

. I know he was a Machine Gunner once & they spend some time in the "Rhineland"

I just dont recall movie.

Should you have a way and ever get a chance I would truly enjoy the photos. Im sure others would like them also. But of course with your concurrence and your time frame.

PS; I just discussed the selling of a piece to a Colonel who retired in 1975
He served near forty, will try to find out where. As you probably
know its tough to talk to some of these fellows.

W.B., I would be more than proud to. I have been putting together a disk for other family members and that would be no problem. I must say, that half these photo's belong to my Brother. I will have to clear it with him first, there is a story behind this maybe I can share some of them one day. I could pick out a few that others maybe interested in over time. Thanks for asking.

It is tough to talk with most Folks who have seen battle. My Brother gave Daddy a tape recorder to save some of his Army tales, but he never did. But he loved to talk about military life in person.

I want to say the name of the movie was "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?". I am not sure about that, but have been wanting to find out. I was told by a neighbor who has Morgans(Horse Breed) that they were sent to Canada.

EDIT: No way was that the movie, forgot I even thought of that!

I did not know but I found some info re; 6th U.S. Calvary Division.
You probably already have but if not. Click on through to the apparel, there is an outfit selling all types. If you follow on through it will lead to the 6th shoulder patch and show a picture. Looks to me as tho you are correct. Try the bottom one if you have no luck with top. This was an edit add.

WOW.......I never knew the conection with Patton's 3rd Army Group or seen this site. He just told me he served under him at one time.

He told me once when he saw the movie 'Patton' with George C. Scott that
"He (Patton) never talked like that" referring to the cussing.

I learned to stay away from commies way before I even knew what they were!

Good morning W.B. and Others

Here is the pair of his boots. They stand about 20 inches tall. They both have his name and serial number printed inside also. I have saddle soaped them and use a clear polish over time. They are a little scuffed, I did wear then to school a couple of times when I was younger.

I wonder what he thought of that!

The leather is in good shape, the soles are cracked because they are leather also.
Hope you enjoy the photo's as much as I enjoy showing them off and spending the time with my Dad.

Here is an 8 by 10 inch B&W photo I have. You can not see it in the image, but written on the Basketball in white is:

You can still read part of 'THORPE' on their shirts.

Photo's has everybody's last name taped to bottom. Bottom row; The gent in uniform on the far left end is a Lieutenant, the guy on your far right is a First Sergeant. Appears to be a diamond in the center of his stripes, if I remember correctly.

My Dad is the guy top row, your left far end. He has been in about 7 years now, 25 years old.
Some of these folks do not know what's coming.......yet.

Must have been taken in front of the gym, I assume (assume....... yeah, I know). The gym is still standing. Need to take a road trip that way this Fall and see Family there also.
One of my Uncle's was just up last week. They meet in Knoxville for their reunion, he is WWII Navy. Lookin' good, still plays golf three days a week.

Fort Oglethorpe is only a stone's throw from Chattanooga, may ride The Train....... Woo Woooooooooooooooo
