Schrade Walden 1194

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Post by TDCase »

How long were these yellow handle trappers (model 1194) made? Thanks TD

UPDATE: (not a 1194 but a model 293 which I found. Not sure why it is listed as 1194Y in some descriptions I've seen on ebay ::shrug:: .....)

Thanks for the replies (hey Randy!) The ones I was looking at were the yellow handle trappers that are tang stamped "Schrade Walden NY USA" and are etched "Everlasting Sharp" on the clip. I went ahead and bought one but I assumed they were like the 293Y ...... Thanks, TDcase

Camillus made some knives for Taylor that were tang stamped Schrade Walden USA with the Everlastingly Sharp etch.
Most were sold in the old style Schrade Walden plastic tubes, IIRC.
The paper in the tube should have Taylor Brands LLC on it if it was made after Schrade closed in 2004.

I've seen a few of those new ones stamped Schrade Walden passed off as old ones on Ebay to people that didn't know their Schrade history. Most had a listing story of being found in an old store that closed years ago.

Here is a 293Y I bought after Schrade closed.
As you can see from the inside of the insert that goes inside the tube, they are made by Camillus for Taylor Brands LLC.

I purchased this not as a part of the USA Schrade history, but as part of the history of Camillus.
It is a quality knife and would no doubt make a good user, but IMHO it is a Camillus, not a Schrade.

If this is the knife you are referring to, it is a Camillus product not a Schrade and definitely not made by Schrade Walden (pre 1973).

I hope this helps clarify the issue,
Dale

I just found some listed on ebay as 1194: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0567046473
I sent the seller a PM and told him they were made by Camillus and not Schrade Walden.
I guess we will see if he posts my email on the auction.

Those 3 in the ebay listing were sold by Smoky and came with a pocketwatch. I still have the catalog here somewhere. If memory serves, they were $75 for the whole lot.

This is a stockman, not a trapper. But the Everlasting Sharp was not common on the pre 1973 Schrade Waldens (there are some 804's with), but here is an 881Y with an etch and marked Schrade Walden, with 881Y on the back. It was a 100 year commemorative made by Schrade in 2004. They are fairly uncommon, and mistaken for Taylor's, given they use that old etch quite a bit.

There is a recent rash of trappers in red, green, etc. with the Everlasting etch and Walden tang stamp. I think these latest ones are by Bear or Utica, not by Camillus. I think they are of VERY recent manufacture.

I'm just back and thanks for all the replies. The one I bought off of ebay was in the mailbox when I returned yesterday and it is the 1194 so I guess it isn't the real deal. It didn't come with a tube, just the knife. Now its as sharp as heck and looks well made but I guess it isn't a real Schrade Walden. I'm a little bummed out because I thought this was a pre-73 Scrhade! On the bright side, it should be a great little EDC  I'll keep looking for a good 293Y and I'm sure one will turn up at some point.... Thanks, TD

Hi fellas, I guess instead of posting a reply I'm just asking more ?'S. Getting interested in Schrade's, have some dad gave me years ago. After reading and re-reading this post still confused. I guess it boils down to "if there is not a box w the knife saying Taylor Brands" what's the tell tail sign it is not a "real Schrade". Someone mentioned that it is real uncommon for the etch of Everlasting Sharp to be on a pre-74(Walden) knife but are there anymore for sure things to look at. As in the shield(some say Schrade, some blank) and Ive noticed that some have the patn# under the tang stamp. Others on the back. Does it change w the era of the knife and the patn#. Is it mainly this group of knives(1194, 293) that are being mis- represented. Please help. Like Camillus, just want to know that I'm buying one.

Here is one just bought recently. Paid $5o for it no box. It looks to good to be a real Walden. Are these being made by Taylor w/o putting China on the blade? All GUN SHY now. THANKS GUYS!

Ambrose,
For the most part the Schrade Walden are stamped on the mark side of the blade with the name and the pattern # is on the pile side, though sometimes the pile side is blank and there is no pattern # on the knife at all.

There are exceptions however, (there always are with Schrade) ::dang::
Here are the exceptions I am aware of at this point in time.
There may be others.

This is the LB1, but is not the Uncle Henry LB-1.
This is the Liberty Bell, a special commemorative.
Not sure on the date off the top of my head, Eric or someone will know.
2# S-W Lib Bell tang LB-1.jpg
2# S-W Lib Bell tang LB-1.jpg (59.86 KiB) Viewed 4077 times

This is the tang stamp of a #163 rope knife-
3# S-W 163 hyphen tang stamp.jpg
This is a 165OT, the Woodsman, a fixed blade-
3# S-W Schrade 165OT tang stamp.JPG
This is the tang stamp of a #136, hawkbill-
4# S-W 136 .jpg
These are the only Schrade Walden tang stamps I am aware of that have the pattern number on the front or mark side of the knife.

There are other models that use these same tang stamps, but these four styles of Schrade Walden tang stamps are the only ones I know of that that include the pattern # with the name on the mark side.

I hope this is not too confusing.

Remember-
With Schrade nothing is carved in stone. The best we can get is a few things etched in Jello!

Thanks Dale! I guess if I'm unsure, post a pic here and see what you guys think. For the most part though I like the vintage knives(the old bone and stag), and Taylor certainly does not make them like that!

Hi Dale, I'm back. Here is one I've been watching(i have one just like it). Based on your post this one is not a walden era knife? I thought it was?
