Scharde seconds ??????

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Scharde seconds ??????

Post by ringergary »

Hi all, Another question, is there such a thing as Scharde seconds. A seller has a 34OT for auction with the tang markings ground off and he claims it is a second.. I think it sounds suss. Could be from over the water. What's the verdict, thanks Gary. ::shrug:: ::shrug::

A Schrade second...hmm...sounds bogus. More likely a Taylor Schrade being misrepresented. Have any pictures? The Old Timer shields are different on the new ones...has that toothed look around the outside, I believe. What's the supposed defect? If it's seviceable, offer them $3.

There is such a thing as seconds but I am not sure they were intended to be sold directly to the public but they sure ended up being sold second market or whatever. Also the problem is you dont know what you have unless its in your hand with something like that. You should really know or trust the seller before you spend your money!
Here is a tang marking I still cant figure out?? Although there is no other markings I know its a import from the quality but that tang is,well????

Schrade did sell seconds quite often. They ran a small store front where they sold them and they offered them up to employees throughout the year for purchase. The sales team sold them on the road and there were alot of other venues where the Schrades left the factory and were sold!

I can atest to this via hands on experiance.

The seconds were often marked by slashes or x's throug the Tang Stamps and sometimes the tangs were ground down!

I was sure that it was a import but what would be the reason for those marks thru the Schrade ??

Chinese knives probably have rejects also. Yours (Gino) is Chinese. In addition to the different font, the U.S.A knives always had USA stamped, unless it was ground off. If it was ground off, as it was on some seconds, all of it would have been ground off. American Schrades always say USA on them. There are presently a great deal of USA seconds, mismatched blades, knives with no shield, short runs unfinished, and forty eleven other oddball combinations now being sold by the folks who attended the bankruptcy auction. Also, Taylor commissioned, and continues to commission knives stamped "Schrade Walden/NY/USA from Utica and Bear and Son, and formerly from Camillus between 2004 and 2007. These are not Schrades as such, but they are USA knives. They are better than the imports. Some are excellent. These are hard for newbies to recognize. I think I can probably spot all of them by now, from experience. Before the Schrade bankruptcy, Camillus, Ulster and Imperial (in RI) all traded parts, jobs, and even employees with the Schrade factory from time to time. Confused yet?

Another tell tale sign on the Uncle Henry (Stag/Delrin) is almost all, Again-Almost all, blade tangs are stamped SCHRADE+

This is because the vast majority of Uncle Henry knives had the Stainless Steel blades. The Old Timers had the Carbon Steel.

This is not 100% because there were a small amount of the UH that had carbon steel blades as well....remember, this is Schrade we are talking about and almost anything is possible!

I have to agree with Chase i worked in the same building as Schrade in Ellenville. all there seconds were clearly marked with a grind mark or a X.

Yes, Ringergary, the knife in the listing is definitely genuine USA. What the defect is.... who knows? I have bought two knives in the last year which, upon opening the blade, exhibited slightly proud backsprings. They weren't marked as seconds either. This was probably example of stuff that was auctioned and in bins in the factory for many years.

The shield looks crooked to me. Or maybe it's just the photograph, but then it could be my eyes.

The reason it is "marked" as a second may never be known to the average person. It could be that the Shield is crooked, gap on the spine is off, rivet too deep... any number of things. And the problem could be so miniscuel that you wouldn't know. My mother worked for Schrade for more than 37 years. Her job for the last 20 years was Quality Control and she rejected many knives for even the slightest imperfection that you or I wouldn't even consider.
Schrade had gauges for every step in the knife making process and if the part didn't fit the gauge...reject. Sometimes these parts could make it all the way to final production and inspection before they were found...and there you have it...a SECOND!

Food for thought!
