Is this what you had to begin with, or were the handles on it before these pictures?

Can't wait to see what happens next.

ok, here are the pieces after filework and new handles. the blade and backspring were filed with a small triangle file, small round and half inch half-round files. polished with felt bob and grey pol. compound. i polished the inside of the spring as well. the sides of the springs are polished but still have stains, but that won't be visable. i'm in the process of pinning the handles. the bolster liners were attached with small pins and a tab from the old plastic scales. i utilized the larger holes for my new pins, big pins. re-assembly is next.

I'm enjoying this Johnnie, thanks again for sharing this with us...I'm wanting to get into repair and restoration in a bad way but I don't have the time at this moment in life.... ::disgust::

That's why your topic and Agteacher and MM sharing their work means so much... 8) :D

thanks again kaleb.
sunburst if you are enjoying then i must be havin a blast! kaleb and jeff a lot more experienced than me and i read and re-read their tech stuff.
anyhoo, it's finished, here's the pics.
klein 3 1/4" utility.
handle material - purple heart(from jeff jones)
blade and spring fileworked and polished

i only have one kind of nickle rod, and it didn't match the bolsters in color but that's ok.
the original handle pins were very small. i used the holes in the liners where the old plastic covers attached instead and used a much larger pin. just because. pins are hammered not spun. i like hammered pins on this knife. the next one i do will have spun pins and i will photo the tools and steps required.

Nice Job Johnnie!! ::tu::

I think the big pins give a very custom look. I like for my knives to be immediately recognizable as a customized piece. I wan't people that may not be "Knife" people to recognize the difference. You have certainly got that.

I'm glad the Purple heart worked good for you. How many splinters did you get? If you will leave it in the sun or expose it to heat like a heat gun or lamp before you seal it, the color will get darker and deeper.

thanks bill, that means a lot.

thanks jeff, splinters? only one and it was major! bled like i was cut. ::dang:: :lol: yeah, the pins set it off. i thought about turnin it into a wharnie but the more i looked at it ...... the blade was in pretty good shape and since i rehandled in wood, almost looks like an original in spriit.

Nice work Johnnie! ::tu:: ::drool::

Your knife looked so good I had to make a Wharncliffe out of one of those little M. Kleins I had laying around. I am stilling way down on the learning curve, but it did boost my confidence a bit, and show me that I need to make some good head spinners.

I just got Adrian Harris' book a couple days ago and he tells how to make your own head spinners, so I need to give it a try, as the commercial ones just don't give me the result I want.

Keep up the great work,
Dale

thanks a lot dale. your knife looks gooood! nice wood. it does look good as a wharnie. ::tu:: i cut the outside diameter and increased the angle on my comercial spinner. it was made too thick. ::shrug:: now it does'nt cut much more than the pin. let me know how your shopmade spinner and base turn out. the one i have and others i've seen could have been made with more thought.
harris' book has some good info.
