When did Schrade drop the NY ?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

When did Schrade drop the NY ?

Post by marcellusW »

Anyone have an answer as to when the NY was dropped?
OR... did both types of tang stamps occur throughout 1973 -2004??

For a specific example

Schrade
NY USA
340T

Schrade
USA 34OT

Thanks

That is a good question for stamp and dating junkies.

For the patterns that followed that convention, Walden was dropped from the name, the stamp began in 1973, and it roughly ended in the mid to late 1970's. Maybe some patterns a bit longer, but it is difficult to track. There were a handful of the Open Stock folders (by Open Stock, not Uncle Henry and Old Timers) that has that stamp with the pattern number on the back side too, like a Schrade Walden NY USA style of stamp.

It is confusing, as I think for example, there were some new patterns that came out with a three lined stamp during that time period, but did not have the NY in the stamp. The 194OT and 94OT for example, first appeared in 1976, as did the 77OT, but I do not believe a 77OT ever had the three line stamp, and none of these three had the NY. The 61OT also came out in 1976, and it always had the three line stamps. The 194 and 94 changed to a two liner at some point.

It seems like the 33OT and 34OT may have kept the NY Stamp for the longest duration.

Similarly was the Schrade Walden NY stamping that began in 1946, in which all blades were stamped, and there were no pattern numbers. By the early 1950s, the Schrade Walden NY USA stamp replaced those, only the masters were stamped, and they started stamping the pattern number on the back.

I know, you asked me what time is was, and I'm telling you how to build a watch...

Thanks thawk
That was helpful info
Without year of manufacture codes ( i.e Case 1970 - present) , it takes more effort to try to pin down the years of production
Yes, I am a bit of a date junkie
It adds interest to the collecting field
Your answer confirms my assumption on the NY stamp were on the earlier knives, but wanted to check with other collectors

I do have a
Schrade
Walden
NY USA

34OT with the model # on the pile side of the master blade
Dated 1959 - 1973
