Post by francis5002 »

Desperate for someone to repair a broken handle on a 30 yr old Robt Klass (Kissing Crane) four blade pocket knife. Handle is Mother Of Pearl. Knife was in near mint condition until I dropped it. Given to me by a very dear friend of 88 yrs of age, also a Kentucky Colonel. I must somehow get this knife repaired. Willing to pay a very reasonable fee for service. I also do not know where to obtain the Mother Of Pearl for the repair so I will need assitance with that issue. If interested or know of someone PLEASE contact me at 1-513-594-2253, or email: [email protected] Please! Please! Please! someone help me with this problem.......

www.knifehandles.com is the best supplier of Mother-of-Pearl there is. They have all grades and can usually sell just one piece if that is all you need and you can usually order close to the size you need to avoid over spending. Best of luck!

francis5002, Welcome to AAPK! ::welcome::

The big problem you will have is finding someone who will actually work with MOP.

#1- It is very expensive so if I break a piece or chip a piece, (which is very easy to do), I will have to buy another one. I don't know about other repairmen, but for me knife repair is a hobby. I can't afford to buy a $80 piece of pearl to replace the one that cracked or chipped while I was working on it. MOP is a natural product and it can have hidden flaws that you cannot see. If it breaks while I am working on it I am out the price to replace it and in the hole on that repair. If I have a couple pieces break or chip on me, I have to dig deep in my pocket. That takes the fun out of my hobby, so I choose not to work with MOP.

#2- Some people are allergic to the dust created by working MOP. I know one repairman who reacts violently to MOP dust.

#3- The dust created from sanding and cutting MOP is poisonous and I have to wear a respirator to work with the stuff, and I do not like to wear the darn thing. Also, my dogs are always in the shop with me and I don’t have 4 doggie respirators. There are plenty of other beautiful handle materials that I can work with just a dust mask, so I choose not to work with MOP.

I realize this does not help you in your situation of replacing an existing broken MOP handle.
I only say these things so you realize why you are having such a hard time finding someone to repair your knife.

I really hope you find someone to fix your knife.
Sorry I can't help you.
Good luck, ::tu::
Dale.

I'll post this for future references. All to often you see posts for knife mechanics on here. There are some wonderful people that do beautiful work on here - but they have 6 month back logs and are hard to get into to. Here is a guy that advertises in Knife World. He is retired from Case and does good work at a reasonable price. He will also trade repairs for knives. Tom Abbott 814-362-1590. I am have nothing to gain from this and am just posting it to help others who ask about knife repair service.

nothing hard about getting in my backlog just have to have some patience, everyone has to wait their turn. This is a niche market and quality services are always in demand. I'd be more than happy to do the work if I weren't allergic to pearl dust :( .
