FS/T: more books

Post by coffeecup »

Still continuing to dig through the stacks of books and setting stuff aside as I search for stuff I need to be studying right now. This week I've got a mix of history, Shaker stuff, shooting, some unusual fiction, and kayaks and sailboats; eclectic, but absolutely guaranteed to be more entertaining than the stuff I'm reading this week! (For the insanely curious, that would be Personality Development in Individuals with Mental Retardation and Enhancing Nonsymbolic Communication Interactions among Learners with Severe Disabilities.)

The usual terms apply: Unless noted, the books are softback and in good readable condition (but please do read the notes, because there may be exceptions to both of those). Shipping in the US via USPS Media Mail will run $3 for the first book, +$1 for each additional book. Buy a bunch and we'll work out some kind of discount.

DJ=dust jacket, HB=hard back, SB=soft back, ex lib=ex-library book

Trades: In addition to the usual stuff I'm looking for (Western and Western SFOs, moose/caribou/some elk antler, and German shepherd dog books), I'm currently seeking a Queen trapper or "utility" knife (like a single bladed trapper) with D2 blade(s).

History:
Gunfighters by Col. Charles Askins. NRA edition, no dustjacket. A bit worn on the corners but not bad. A definite Texas bias on the part of the author. $5

A Murder in Wartime by Jeff Stein. HB with dust jacket. Covers the "Green Beret murder case" from the late '60s, a fascinating look at how the courts and public were forced to adapt to some of the realities of unconventional warfare back in the '60s (and how we still haven't). $5

Jackboot: A History of the German Soldier 1713-1945 by John Laffin. HB with dust jacket; the 1995 reprint of the 1965 edition. This is a look at how German military traditions arose, and provides some insight into contributing factors that lead to the events of the 20th century. $5

Shaker stuff (how's that for a descriptive term!):
Shaker Bandsaw Projects by Mark Duginske & Chris Morris. SB, ex lib and marked as such. Discusses the use of a bandsaw as the primary tool in several reproductions of Shaker woodenware and furniture. $5

Shop Drawings of Shaker Furniture, Woodenware, Ironware, and Tinware by Ejner Handberg. HB with DJ, some rubbing on DJ. One of the early (and better) books on Shaker material culture, from the perspective of the modern craftsman. It includes measured drawings and photos of examples of most common Shaker items. (The contents of the book have been published over the years in several editions, sometimes in multiple volumes. If you've got one or two of them, there is some duplication.) $10

Shop Drawings of Shaker & Tinware by Ejner Handberg. SB, newer edition. As far as I can tell, this volume includes everything covered in the relevant section of the book above--I wouldn't get them both. $5

Shooting, hunting, and similar fun:
Reloading for Shotgunners edited by Robert S. L. Anderson. SB, some wear and markings, from DBI books in the early '80s. $5

The Fighting Rifle:A Complete Study of the Rifle in Combat by Chuck Taylor. SB from Paladin Press. More a discussion of technique than a detailed history; Taylor is a noted firearms instructor. $10

The Combat Shotgun and Submachine Gun: A Special Weapons Analysis by Chuck Taylor. SB from Paladin Press. In this volume, Taylor does for the shotgun and submachine gun what he did for the rifle in the previous book. Interesting, but again, more a discussion of technique and training than a detailed history. $10

The Shotgunner's Book by Colonel Charles Askins. HB with DJ. Askins looks at guns, various uses, and gives tips to improve your outcomes. If I'm reading the Roman numerals right, this is from about 1953. $5

Three from the North American Hunting Club: High Country Hunting by Bare, Bowhunting Big Game by Dietrich, and Hunting Whitetails Successfully by Fears. All HB (no DJ) with matching binding. $10 for all 3.

Fiction:
The Human Zero: The Science Fiction Stories of Erle Stanley Gardner edited by Greenberg and Waugh. HB with DJ, ex lib and marked as such. A hard to find book from an author you'd never expect to have written it. $10

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. SB. $3

Long Ride Home by W. Michael Gear. SB. $3

Kayaks and boats:

Five books on kayaking: Kayak Touring by Harrison, The Kayak Companion by Glickman, Kayak Essentials by Beazley, Kayaking: An Illustrated Guide to Equipment, Technique, Navigation, and Safety by Kuhne, and The Kayak Shop: Three Elegant Wooden Kayaks Anyone Can Build by Kulczycki. All SB, I got these to read up while we were considering kayaking with the Scouts. $25

Four books on boats and sailing: Your First Sailboat: How to Find and Sail the Right Boat for You by Spurr; and by the Editors of WoodenBoat Magazine: Fifty Wood Boats: A Catalog of Building Plans, Thirty Wooden Boats: A Second Catalog of Building Plans, and Forty Wooden Boats: A Third Catalog of Building Plans. All SB. The Catalog series has a previous owner's name written inside. The series contains a review/discussion on both the 120 sets of plans from various people, and the resulting boats. $30

As always, thanks for looking!
Jim
