Anyone know anything about canes?

I picked this one up at the flea market this weekend. How old is it? Is it African? About how much is it worth? Thanks for any help. Mark.

I know nothing about canes, but it looks like it is made of Ebony?

I'm pretty sure its ebony. It's very heavy and hard.

Not sure what the wood is, but my guess on first seeing it was that it originated somewhere in Indonesia, or maybe New Zealand (but the carving doesn't look right for New Zealand). I sorta collected African carvings for a while, and the carving style doesn't look like anything I saw then.
