I wonder how many acres of dirt he has and if he would be willing to sell the whole shebang, one price takes all. Since he's asking $15 a quart, the price per acre might be a little steep but don't you think he might be willing to offer a quanity discount? A lot depends on exactly where his dirt is.

That's not so far fetched Slim. There are people who collect sand from Pacific islands where WWII battles took place (esp. Iwo Jima). I wouldn't be surprised if there were collectors of dirt from famous battlefields around the world and maybe other historically significant places.

I think that would be neat as heck to have some sand from Iwo Jima , Normandy, etc. I'd have to go and dig it myself though, not sure I'd believe any ole dirt dealer. I really do think it would be neat though. I'm a weirdo.......I know........I accept it.

If you want sand from Iwo Jima, you must go there or know someone who has been or is going to go. The Japanese don't allow anyone to visit the island on their own. It's all special tours.

As we all know, there are numerous nefarious individuals out there that are ready, willing and able to take advantage of collectors by offering for sale items that have been faked, altered, or cobbled together from parts.

They sell them and always describe them as "Old", "Vintage", "Antique", etc.

How are we to know this guy's dirt is genuinely antique?

I mean, organic materials have been decomposing into dirt for millions of years. The leaves that I neglected to rake last Fall are turning into dirt right now.

I would think a jar of the genuine old, antique dirt from the archaeological digs at Oldavai Gorge in Sub-Saharan Africa would be much more desirable to an antique dirt collector than would a jar of simple loam that some guy pulled from the bottom of his own compost pile and only dates to one or two years of age.

I suspect this guy, if not a genuine crook, is actually totally ignorant of the true age of the dirt he's offering for sale.

How far down below the surface did he dig to acquire this dirt?

We have no way of knowing.

Are you aware of any condition or age standards for antique dirt established by The National Antique Dirt Collectors Association?

I think you should all be extremely cautious in dealing with this guy.

Why is he selling on Craig's List instead of using the Antique Dirt category on Ebay, a much more trustworthy venue?

Personally, I wouldn't even think of buying his dirt without a Certificate of Authenticity.

Besides, I've got tons of New Old Stock antique dirt in my back yard. Found some just the other day while planting roses for Sarah.

Another thing that really bothers me are sellers that say the dirt is "professionally cleaned". If you clean all the dirt out of dirt, what do you have left? I think professionally cleaning dirt is just a scam so they can charge you more!

Kindly post a picture of said (counterfeit) dirt that is in question. I can tell by looking at a picture whether or not it is authentic antique/vintage dirt.
