Southern Pacific Lines Hospital Department Pill Boxes

Post by Mossdancer »

These things smell mildewey enough to be many decades old. They are about a half inch deep, an inch and a quarter wide by approx. 2 1/2 inches long. Any ideas on authenticity? This is what is neat about old stuff, I never had any idea the RR's had their own Hospitals. A great read if you want to know, look it up on Google.

Railroads were the first American industry that had retirement, medical care, etc. Lots of good benefits for their employees; of course that was in their heyday. I used to pass the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Hospital in Rocky Mount NC when I was a young man - it was an abandoned building then and was across the street from the huge (then) Emerson Car Shops. That was in the early to mid 1970's; the ACL Hospital building has been bulldozed a good 20 - 25 years now I would guess. OH

Old Hunter:
Was speaking to a fellow a few days ago who agreed whole heartedly with you about the benefits. He related the story; Mid 50's he worked for the RR somewhere, his wife went in for their first child. Had a cesarean, it was a serious undertaking back
then. He said the RR took care of all charges and ended up sending him a check for the remainder of benefits for $21.00. Now that was good care and honesty.
