Two timebombs

I was digging around in my projects box and found these two cellos. One is a Fight n´Rooster and the other one a Linder Morning Star. When I bought them I wanted to rehandle them but after a little TLC they don´t look that bad. There are a few scratches and rust marks and the handles have shrunken a bit but I decided to keep them in their original condition for now.
Let´s keep thumbs pressed that they don´t go boom anytime soon....

I will store them in the cupboard and not with the rest of the collection.

A couple of fine looking knives, Skipper. I love the beautiful looks that can be made with Celluliod but I don't trust it as far as I can throw it.

Yes Jerry, it has the same meaning. I guess I could throw such a knife for quite a distance - wouldn´t trust them that far myself!

Yeah, always the same with the southern girls. They look georgeous when they´re young. Those two are german girls from Solingen, too bad they will outgass in the end too.....

This reminds me that a couple of years ago there was a guy on Ebay selling a process to seal or stabilize celluloid knife handles.
I was tempted to try it, but by that time, there were no more listings.
I think the cost was around $20.
It would be worth it on nice knives like those.

I know of no way to stabilize celluloid once it starts to out-gas.The worst part is a lot of the time it starts underneath the scale and doesn't show on the outside except that the blade has a coating of rust;mostly where it is exposed to the atmosphere.
I had a beautiful Buck Creek lockback that exhibited such tendencies and I would faithfully clean off the rust and polish the whole knife;being careful not to overheat the celluloid or get oil on it. One day I opened it up to clean;did my cleaning and then went to close it back up.I pressed down on the lock and the back of the knife broke in half! The outgassing had corroded the brass liners so badly that they disintegrated.The scales were still like new on the outside.
Here's a picture of a StaSharp pen knife I bought awhile back just because it was so badly damaged and yet the stainless blades were virtually untouched.Pretty scary.

Now that´s scary for sure! I should have no more than about six knives with cello handles, all of them bought cheap. They are stored in the open and away from my other knives
in a cupboard. Let´s keep thumbs pressed that they will keep up. If not - c´est la vie.....
