Western Scout restore by Elvis!
A few weeks ago I was asking questions about an old bone scaled Western scout on eBay. I asked Coffeecup about it, and he mentioned he had one that was good except it was loose and had no snap, said he'd send it to me if I wanted it, OF COURSE I wanted it. A few days later the prettiest Western scout arrived you'd ever seen. And he was right! On the blade end it was loose as a goose and had zero snap.
So I contacted our very own Elvis (who is one fine gentleman, and it's been a pleasure getting to know him). I sent him the knife, he disassembled it, had the tang welded up, put it back together, made a new bail for it, and now it's tight and snaps like new. And all this for a reasonable fee too.
Here are some pics of the knife, including one that Elvis took showing how the tang had worn unevenly on one side leaving an "ear" from being loose all these years. I'm sure he'll be along later to fill in any details. Thank you Elvis and Coffeecup!

Wow. Bob did a great job on that knife. Looks like new production!
The bone looks great, and though I am not much of a "bail" man, that elongated one looks cool on the knife.
Nice save!

Thanks guys.
Glen, I'm not typically a bail man either. But it just seemed right on this restore for some reason.

We aim to please. Thanks for all the kind words Wade! The end that had the missing bail was a bit of a challenge though. The other end took a 3/32" pin as expected, but the holes on the bail end were nearly 1/8". Since none of the bails I had on-hand could stand having a hole that large drilled through them I ended up making one out of nickel/silver pin stock. The Colonel was kind enough to provide me with a picture of one that still has it's bail, so at least I had something to go by. He had seen this tutorial I'd done some time ago (http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... 37&t=23801) and decided I was the man for the job. I appreciate his confidence in me and am very glad he's happy with my results and the knife.

Great old knife Wade. Elvis is one fine craftsman and a very good guy.
I got one he handled for me and I love to show it off every chance I get, so hear it is lol.

Re: Western Scout restore by Elvis!
I can answer that one. These scales are original to the knife. That's one reason I felt it was worth the redo, the bone as old as it is is still perfect. Not a crack or chip. Also the fact that Elvis was able to do all he did and preserve the bone. I think that speaks volumes about his skill.orvet wrote:Very nice work Bob!![]()

I can't wait until my hands are well enough to sharpen again. This one will see some pocket time.

I thought that looked like older bone.
It is often much more difficult to take a knife apart without damaging brittle handles, like bone & stag, without cracking it.
Extra nice job Bob!

I should have updated that comment. I didn't check it at first since I'm so used to having to sharpen knives I get in. But the other day I had it out admiring it and sure enough it is sharp. Thank you sir!
