"SERPENTINE JACK" PATTERN

NO-- SWELL END,PEANUT,TAPERING ON ONE END,ECT-PLEASE

anybody know when this pattern started (round abouts???) maybe this thread will help narrow that down

I'm fighting a growing addiction to the Camillus 14. It's a Serpentine Jack that's 3¼" closed. For some reason, it just fascinates me.

I think the Camillus 24 qualifies. Let me know what you think.

How about this Case Texas Jack?

I think what he was trying to say; is nothing he posted in those pics were under 3".
But a serpentine jack in this topic can be any size.

Tommy, right now the #14s are really reasonable (in my mind). The bone handle cost me $20 shipped and that's the most I've paid for one, even in factory condition. Of course there isn't a great deal of variety so maybe that's why there doesn't seem to be much collector interest. They are a very pleasing knife in the hand.

Here are some old stock Imperial jacks I got at the OKCA show last weekend.
All are shell handles and will be in my store eventually:

I would think this would be classified as a serpentine jack.

Cute little guy and very sharp!

This one is a bit bigger, also sharp!

I bought 2 each of these knives and when I sat at my table to look at them I thought they were rusted shut.
I finally got one open and realized the factory lube in the joints had dried out and set up like glue.
I put some 3 in 1 oil in them and it was thin enough to thin out the factory lube.
I cleaned them up when I got home and now they work great!



This last one is one I just shipped out to a friend who collects Schrades.
I had the pic handy so thought I would show it as well.

The 893 was a non catalog item probably made for SMKW.
It was shipped to me in an 895 box. The 895 was a slim stockman pattern.

I have more serpentine jacks. I will post more pics as I find them.

Spent some of Saturday scouting for pocket knives and found this one. Nice sized Case knife. Can someone educate me on the difference between a serpentine jack pattern and a stockman pattern?

Peas and carrots. Serpentine is a frame shape. A jack is usually considered a two blade knife with both blades on the same end. Most often a clip and a pen blade.

A stockman is a three blade knife, usually a large clip blade, sheepfoot blade and a spay blade.

This is a Serpentine Jack. Note how the handle kind of "flows", thus the serpentine (serpent / snake)

This is a classic stockman.

Thanks for the explanation and the pictures. In looking at a few pictures and descriptions last night in Steve Pfeiffer's Case Knives book, it sort of seemed like the difference was square bolsters vs round ones. Your pictures do show a subtle difference in frame shape that wasn't apparent to me last night.
