Old Schrade Walden, How Old?
I would appreciate any info regarding age. The tang is stamped
Schrade Walden NY USA. Does that date it 1946-1950's.
The pen blade is very clean verses the main blade but the knife does not
look like it was repaired.
I look forward to your comments.

Paul, generally that tang stamping was used from 1946 to 1973, with some overlap with others. The knife looks in great shape. It is called an Easy-Open Jack, or EO jack. Oil the joint, rub a trace of mineral oil on the wood, and keep it dry!
Don't clean it, in my opinion, as you get best value from "as found" knives; that is if you are collecting it. If you are using it, do what you want!
If it snaps good, and doesn't wobble, and there are no chips, cracks or other flaws, it's worth $80 to 160, depending on who's buying!
My 2 cents!

Paul,
That looks like it might be much closer to a 1946 vintage due to the fact that it is a dead ringer for the Schrade Cut Co 2012, minus one pin. You don't see any of the later Waldens with that shield or large spear point blades. Is the pen blade stamped as well?
Charlie, do you have any Waldens with that configuration?
Eric

I agree its older...you rarely see Walden stamped knives in ebony. I wonder if any of the 1950's catalogs even showed ebony handled knives. The 1964 catalog did not.ea42 wrote:Paul,

I agree with you all, it's probably an older one.ea42 wrote:Paul,

Eric, I have a barehead jack in ebony, with that same blade and shield configuration, stamped Walden.
I can't get to my knives to scan it in right now.
What do you think of my evaluation BTW??
Hey knifeaholic, can you direct me to a copy of the 1964 catalog

Charlie,
Sorry, I somehow missed your post, yes, dead on if you ask me. I'd love to see that ebony Walden
Paul, I was thinking transition knife myself, or at least close to it. I need to find out how many years they made those big jacks, of course I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Schrade Walden literature.

Looks OK, but maybe BUFFED enough to change the shape of the bolsters..... maybe even exposing the liner on the back of the knife?

Bill, the handle wear is commonly seen on heavily carried knives, I've seen it alot in buying parts knives. I must agree on the bolsters being polished though (nothing really wrong with that in my eyes) looks like it was carried alot and used little. carry wear could have resulted in the difference in bolster bevel.

LT will be along grasshopper!
In the meantime, my far less schooled opinion is that carryover patterns continued much longer than a few months. More like years. Without an annual series of catalogs, it's virtually impossible to pin down a year here. A five to ten year range, early in the Walden era seems as close as one could come.

I think you are right Charlie, the patterns did carry over for considerable time in some instances.upnorth wrote:LT will be along grasshopper!

I spoke to LT a couple days ago & he has been very busy lately, but I know he will be along here as soon as he gets some time. The museum project will consume a vast amount of his time as that gets closer to becoming a reality.
Be sure to watch Larry's site http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/
He has put some old price lists on there & that might help you date a knife or at least give you a range of production dates. But we all know that Schrade catalogs & price lists were not totally accurate. It seems that Schrade's priority was making quality knives, not accurate catalogs.
Hope this helps,
Dale

You guys do not need me you are right on the money. Mid 40tys right after Baer took over ( probably just after WWII.) Since he did not change tangs until after WWII. Really pretty much the same as the CUT version.
I went down to Manhattan on Monday. First time in years since I used to bring inmates to NYC for funeral visits. I never drove then ( being the senior officer ) and I did not drive this time DDRUGER and I went down in his van. What a nightmare miserable people and about a zillion of them. We went down to pick up a KEEN KUTTER 3 X 5 X 2 feet. etched KK logo Oak wavy glass and just a beauty. 1900 or earlier. What a trip . However it is a dandy. I have absolutely no where to put it. It is presently in the garage until I can figure it out. But it is safe.
On the good side during the trip I was introduced to something called an auto GPS a Garmin C330. Damn what a neat item. A womans voice calmly gives instructions and directions. If you make a wrong turn she just says recalculating and does not swear at you for making a mistake. This might have helped save my marriage it it had been around years ago. Any way I am going to buy one, only I do not know much about them that C330 has been around for a couple of years but seemed fine to me. The price has also come down on them. It sure did the job does anyone know any thing about these or have any recommendations. I do have stuff to show and talk about but I have been running around quite a bit. Seems like you guys are on top of things. LT PS knives stamped on one or both blades are both correct.

The Gov has not signed it I have no idea however I smell a rat. So who knows. I expect nothing and I am never disappointed. Putting your faith in a NY politician to do the right thing just because it is the right thing is like starting to smoke cigaretes to improve your health. Oh by the way if you have the news on, the area I was in in NYC just blew up leaving a giant crater in the street. ( A 24 inch steam pipe they say ) However being quite paranoidal I am sure it was meant for me and they had there days wrong. LT
