Identify a Schrade Walden

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Identify a Schrade Walden

Post by edge213 »

Can anyone give me a pattern number for this knife? Age?
I'm communicating with Elvis about repairing it. The third blade is broken off. Tang stamp is....1st line: SCHRADE, 2nd line: WALDEN, 3rd line: NY USA. If Elvis doesn't have a parts knife, do any of you guys have one for sale?

Pattern should be 863. 50's to early 60's best guess.

Sorry to disagree with you Wayne but it's not an 863. The 863 is a swell center Carpenter's & Whittler's pattern just like the Camillus 72 and the Ulster 63. It's 3-5/8" closed with a clip main, small clip & coping secondarys. The 863 and the 861 are the only two Schrade patterns I'm familiar with.

That does appear to be an 863, the "Kon-Kav" version from the looks of it. This one had a saber ground clip with a coping blade behind it. Opposite these was another smaller flat ground clip. Your knife has been WELL used! The hafts appear to be in great shape though. Here's a link to a 1953 catalog with an image of that knife, should be on the bottom of page two:

I'm not sure why you think it's not an 863. It appears to be a swell center about 3 5/8" closed and is missing one it's 3 original blades. Unlike the Ulster 63 and Camillus 72 it originally had the 2 smaller blades in the same end opposite the larger master blade. The two remaining are very well worn. Looks like an 863 to me but I've been wrong before so this wouldn't the first time.

The Camillus 72, and Schrade 863 did not have the 2 small blades at one end.
This pic is from Collectors of Schrade: (thank you Larry!)
863.jpg
The 72 and 863 are not "true Whittlers" according to whittler purists.
A knife with 2 small blades on the end opposite the master blade, with a master blade that is tensioned by both smaller springs is a "true Whittler". It sounds like your knife is a "True Whittler" that is missing one of the smaller blades, but it is hard to tell from the picture.

Can you post some better pics of your knife, esp one looking down on the top of the knife with the blades closed?
Thanks. ::tu::

Difficult for me to see from that picture. Here's a NOS Schrade 863 that was gifted to me by Rocky. (Thanks Squirrel)
Followed by an Ulster 63.
Followed by a Camillus 72.

Edit: Dale and I were typing at the same time.

Well, looks like I was wrong (again) about the blade configuration. Yes just like the 72 and 63 patterns mentioned. I tend to be a bit dyslexic at times but I do think it is an 863 pattern that is missing one blade. I think that is the correct answer to the original question.

If not an 863 what is it?

More pics.
From all the above info it sure looks like an 863 to me, but I have ZERO experience with Waldens. This is the only one I have.

It looks to be a early knife .I would say by the shield and long pull on the main blade I could have been a knife made for Sears (Craftsman ).
Here a few pictures of 863 pattern
The first is a Craftsman long pull.
Second is a pre Swindon System (before 1960 )
Third is a bone Kon Kav made after 1960
All these knives have bone handles
The shield on your knife is different to the Schrade Waldens I have and no pattern number makes me think It was a contract knife

The knife I posted does have SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA on the tang. And if you look at ea42's post above he has a link to a 1953 Schrade catalog. On the second page it has a knife that to me looks just like my knife with identical shield.

I have several knives with Schrade Walden on them and also Craftsman etched on the blade some of these knives are missing the Schrade Walden pattern number or stamped on a different part of the tang to the normal Schrade Walden knives .It is another thing Schrade did for what reason I do not know. ::shrug::

Sometime in the year 1960, I believe, Schrade made a 100% switch to Delrin, and used ZERO bone from that point on until they gradually phased it back in several years later for the collector market. At that point, I believe I read somewhere that they were getting their bone from Germany (and I think that Germany gets most of their bone from their holdings in Argentina). I am going on information I have received from folks more knowledgeable than I, and I could be a bit off here, but not by far.

The 863 with the shield that's present on the OP's knife along with the Kon-Kav blade was available from around 1953 to somewhere around the mid 1960's. It was re-introduced around 1972-73 with an oval shield and sometimes a federal shield, but no longer with the fancy shield since that design was now used for the Uncle Henry knives.
