Question: early Schatt Morgan knife

This is my Curtin Clark Cutlery knife that I only recently found out was probably made by the original Schatt and Morgan. It has characteristic slanted and pinched bolsters and also a "9" on the reverse main tang. Can anyone here expand a bit on the history, specifically to the 9 stamp and why that was used? Curtin and clark was a kansas Mo company who had other quality makers produce knives for them. I have found other ccc knives listed as tied to s&m and with the "9" stamp regardless of pattern type.
