THESE WERE NOT CUSTOMIZED BY HERMAN WILLIAMS

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

THESE WERE NOT CUSTOMIZED BY HERMAN WILLIAMS

Post by dweb1897 »

These two listings recently appeared on Ebay.
I didn’t believe Herman had done the work on these knives, as anyone familiar with his work could obviously see, and Emailed him. He replied that he had been following the LB3 listing and had Emailed the seller, telling him that it was not his work, and had asked the seller to retract the listing. The seller did not retract the listing. The LB1 had already sold by the time Herman discovered it. He Emailed the seller and asked that the buyer be informed that the knife was not his work and that a copy of this be sent to him. The seller did not do this either.

I have bought knives from this seller and have been treated fairly but it is obvious that not everyone can say that. Hopefully the buyers will see this , and demand their money back.

I have purchased knives from this seller.I always check the pictures in their listing as they are not always as stated ( crack free and you can see cracks, looks unused etc )
I know they sell a lot of knives but if you take a picture of a knife ,surely you can see the knife and defects.
To be told that the knife was wrong by the person who you stated it was modified by was a good enough reason to relist it with the right information.

I was surprised when Sportcolbs reacted to this situation in this way. Once he was alerted to using the 'great man's' name to sell an item, it should have been pulled at once, and the knife that sold, the purchaser should have been informed, and offered a refund. It appears that none of this happened.
I have had massive dealing with Sportcolbs over the years, and have always found him to be an honorable dealer. Like Grant said he gets the listing wrong from time to time, but when alerted to the error, is always quick to make amends. For this reason i am surprised that this error wasn't rectified...just not good enough.
Herman Williams is one of the most respected names in the knife industry as a Master Craftsman, and is arguably one of the best in the business. Herman signs all his worked knives with "H. WILLIAMS", and if it isn't on the tang, it was not done by him.
I hope you read this Bill, and refrain from this practice in the future(it is still not too late to make amends).
Tony.

I once sent them a message about a knife that had a crack/cracks in it when the description said different. They thanked me and they did nothing about it. I have had good transactions with them in the past, but you are on your own as far as condition and even whether or not the knife is what they say it is. They make mistakes frequently. Sometimes to the buyers advantage and sometimes not. They have become so popular that a decent deal is hard to come by these days and I usually just watch the knives sell for more than I'm willing to pay for them now. They do get alot great knives. I've wondered how they do that.

His policy always seemed : 1. List it for the highest possible return.

2.Worry about the consequences later.

3. Return the money plus shipping,if the customer was not satisfied.

This was my personal dealings several years ago.

I have bought numerous items from this firm and I believe the above comments to be accurate. However, his listings are often extremely inaccurate. I just happen to have enough experience, and his images are good enough, that I pretty much know what I am looking at. I just keep my mouth shut and sometimes I buy, and sometimes not. He is famous enough that he usually gets big money. I suspect that he has employees which do most of the grunt work and write many of the listings, but that is pure speculation. I am surprised that no one in his firm honored Herman's request. That sucks.

I had two unsatisfactory dealings with that seller, and got some very questionable attitude from him!
Altered knives, put right back up for sale after I returned them!
I wouldn't buy knives from him if they were free!

Hi All ,

The listed items as above look to be part of a Schrade SCM set , it could be easily mistaken by the seller that Herman had customised them while working for Schrade , some more details about them (the set i have , not the actual listed knives) in this earlier thread

Thanks AussieBosun for clearing that up and showing us your knives. Beautiful set.
I mentioned earlier that because this seller is so high profile and popular now that I usually just watch their knives sell for more than I am willing to pay. Here is a fine example of what I was talking about. YIKES! Wish all my past ebay sales had been this good.

I understand how easy it would be to list an item and mistakenly credit the work to a knife smith who is known to re-handle Schrades with Sambar stag. Many times a seller only knows the history of a knife from what he was told when it was purchased, and the telling of that history can change significantly as the years go by. What I find inexcusable is failing to stop the sale when informed by Herman that it was not his work. When the seller failed to do this, Herman only asked that the buyer be informed that the work wasn't his and that a copy of that Email be forwarded to him. Certainly the purchaser deserves to know that the knife was not worked on by Herman Williams.

This article may give you some insight on the endless supply of knives that come from the Dusty Duck.

http://nooga.com/161089/bill-swan-selli ... the-world/

If you look at his 99.8% feedback on over 53,000 transactions, it's easy to see his attitude of of "If it ain't broke..." prevails. Every knife auction starts at 99 cents, so he just fuels the fire the way he does and it works for him.

Any chance there is a buffer wheel on that bench somewhere? :D

That was interesting; thanx for posting it. I think Bill is a businessman who sells knives without any particular interest in them (read businessman). He doesn't collect them and doesn't really care about the fine points of any of them. He is not evil. We need to attend to the old 'caveat emptor,' if we wish to remain unreamed. My bore is slightly larger and shinier since I started buying knives in 2007. ::dang::
