Camillus Counter top display goes back in to service

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus Counter top display goes back in to service

Post by gsmith7158 »

I bought this display a couple months ago and being a relative newbie to this sort of thing I didn't know that it was missing the display tray that goes in front of the shelves. ::hmm:: Well it sat in my room empty for a couple of months . Today I decided I would work on it. I went to Lowes and bought some sheet metal because I wanted to use earth magnets to hold the knives to the board. The hardest part was cutting the sheet metal to the proper size but I got her done so here is the process and the finished product.

Wow, that turned out great. The Super 77 adhesive is one high quality product to do a job like that.

Excellent work Greg. I distinctly remember seeing display cases like that in local gun shops when I was a kid. This was "back-in-the-day" when almost all firearms were made of wood and steel. The gun shop owners would line-up all the rifles and shotguns against the back wall, barrels pointed skyward.

The first thing I would see when I walked through the front door were pocket knife display cases just like that one. They were from all different makers too, including Camillus.

Man that brings back some fond memories Greg. Thank you for that. Well done my Friend...

Beautiful display, Greg. Is the glass on the front of the display curved as it looks or is that a mirage? I really like curved glass fronts on displays. Many were done that way years ago. It looks so classy to me. Since it is probably expensive to manufacture, you don't see it done much today. Plexiglass and pasteboard today.

So, the knives are held on by magnets only? What do they look like? Size?

Larry, sorry I took so long to answer you but I had to do a a job Monday and Tuesday morning that required some intense concentration so I've been a little busy. Back to the display though, that is curved plexiglass in the front. What a prize it would be to find one made of glass. To be honest these old displays are pretty neat but they are not nearly as convenient as the displays that use the glass door to press the knives into a foam backing. These old displays were meant for dealers to store their stock on shelves behind a permanent display of knives. I can understand why some people have gotten rid of the display boards and trays. So I have one Camillus and one Case store display so that I believe will be the extent of my antique displays. I do think i will convert my Case display to this magnetic board though. If you are not familiar with earth magnets you will be amazed at their holding power. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, just Google earth magnets and you can buy all you want. On these Camillus knives I used the round 3 mm magnets. I've shown in the pic how I stack and place them on the blade to keep the knife level. For larger knives I use the bar magnets. Be careful though, they are so strong if they get close to one another they will come together with enough force to break them. Their scientific name is Neodymium magnets.
