All About Pocket Knives

I'm getting better but I'm still not there. This is my best one so far. I guess it is acceptable....
I cut up a masonry saw blade for the blade and spring. The scales are a piece of curly maple that came from the dump. I took a knife apart that was in sad shape and used it for a pattern to make my parts. Funny how proportions work out a LOT better when you have a GOOD PATTERN to go by.....LOL.

(Not the Old Timer.... the coke bottle below it....LOL)
The wood on the handles is a sweet piece of curly maple that was a REJECT(?) from the Peavy guitar factory that used to be here in Meridian. I mean the grain MOVES when you turn it. Beautiful wood for sure.

Mike that is a great looking knife. That maple handle is super. I bet that boy will be proud and it will grow in appreciation as the years progress. Excellent job. A very special Christmas present indeed.

Very,very nice. The best Christmas presents are the ones that are handcrafted. We
hung a few ornaments on our tree this year that were made for us by adults and
by our grandchildren.

Hope I get a handmade knife this year!

Thanks Doc... I've been studying blade styles. Some of the way it turned out was sort of a "happy mistake" as Bob Ross would say...... I am pleased I guess.

Great job Mike. Love the pattern and handle material. That should make for some Christmas smiles.

Mike, that’s plumb slick right there! If I might ask, did you use power tools to shake the blade or did you use the jig and file method? Do you do your own heat treating?

Well, I have always subscribed to the "power tools help you make mistakes QUICKER" theory.... Yes, I did use power tools.
I have a 1" wide belt sander that eats up belts rather quickly. I have one of the jigs everyone seems to be using that is a piece of steel angle. I clamp my blade to the side of the angle and sand away everything that doesn't look like a blade.
I also have a filing jig that I use sometimes.
Yes, I have been practicing up on my heat treating too. I use the "magnet method" of heat treating. If you have a magnet close by, you heat the metal until it turns "non-magnetic" and then quench it in burned motor oil.
I don't have a dedicated oven..... yet..... BUT I learned that if I have a good fire in my ole wood stove, I can get the metal up to temp in it.
There is several youtube videos out there that seem to have proven heat treating methods.

That sensation where the color or grain changes with the angle of the light hitting it is called "chatoyance". Birds eye maple, fiddleback maple, and many other woods have that characteristic. Your knife looks great!! Great Christmas gift!!

Man yeah.... I have a couple I have built. I got a stock from Jim Chambers many years ago. That stock has some KILLER flame.
Check out the butt stock.....
