Question About Near-Mint Camillus 44 Stainless

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Question About Near-Mint Camillus 44 Stainless

Post by wlwhittier »

This little sweetheart rolled to the top while I was looking for something else.
The scales appear to be horn, but that may be erroneous.
The bolsters, what there is of them, looks like nickel-silver.
Factory edge, minimal wear, smooth & snappy.
I haven't been able to find any history about this folder

Can anyone tell me when these were made?
Are the scales horn, or another material?
What about the bolsters...and were there any other patterns made similarly?
Thanks, all! wlw

Your knife first shows up in the 1972 catalog and is billed as having gleaming solid black handles with stainless steel blades. I'm going to guess that the handles are a plastic compound of some sort.

The #44 first appeared in the 1972 catalog. As you can see by the picture below, they called it a "Gentleman's knife" and later on (1979) it was listed as a "Sleeve board Pen". It has "tip bolsters" and only appeared in the 1972-1979 catalogs. Handles are black Delrin®. I'd say all the 4x patterns (except the #49 Tuxedo) were "similar".

The Camillus 44 pattern did appear in a December 1949 catalog. I KNOW it's not the same "style" as the 44 pattern knife in question. However, it is a Camillus pattern 44 pocket knife. It was called a Senator's Pen. Click on picture to enlarge.

GOOD LUCK with that pursuit. It's because of you and your original post (OP) that I am
now trying to find information on a Camillus, 2-blade and what I 99.99% believe to be
a pattern #42. ::shrug:: It is in a style that doesn't appear in any of the on-line Camillus catalogs,
any of my Camillus catalogs or catalog pages. The earliest on-line Camillus catalog that
I was able to search was a 1946 catalog. It is frustrating, ::dang:: but a fun frustrating. But when
you do get/find your information, then it's ::ds:: Here is a link to that Camillus catalog
site (it's safe): http://www.collectors-of-camillus.us/
Here is a link to my knife in question (it's AAPK): viewtopic.php?f=63&t=16588&start=1635#p746362
