Ulster Navy/Rope knife date help
This seems to be redundant from what I can see and I apologize for that. I'm from Ulster County, Ny and want to get into collecting these guys. I picked up my first Ulster knife as I was drawn to the square looking sheeps foot blade. I know it's a Navy or rope style knife but I can't figure out what time period it's from.
The tang reads: "ULSTER/KNIFE/CO" all caps.
It's got wooden cocobolo scales
7 1/2 inches open
3 1/2 inch blade length
4 inches closed
Has the lanyard loop
Huge snap when it opens
I'm going to try to upload pictures:

Any help would be so much appreciated. I know these are tricky so just looking to get a round about idea of time period.
I'd love the idea of leaving the knife patina the way it is but sharpening it with my KME sharpening system and trying to add this to my working knife rotation. I really do appreciate it's blade shape.

Prior to 1942 according to the tang stamp.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Re: Ulster Navy/Rope knife date help
Wayne, forget that chart you get that info from. If that were so why do all the WW2 Ulster "mountain troops" knives and other WW2 Ulster knives made for the military all carry the old mark as does the OP knife? I am a firm believer that Albert Baer did not change the Ulster mark until after the war. Just like Case Tested, all the Case folding knives made for the military during WW2 carry the tested mark, so tested did not end in 1940.

Re: Ulster Navy/Rope knife date help
So what is your opinion then? Any idea when they began using this tang stamp or when they introduced whatever model this is into their lineup? I'm assuming the same thing that because of the demand for the war production that there might be some overlap in the end dates. That would definitely make sense. Now on the opposite side, I'm wondering when production of this knife might have begun.Gunsil wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 9:30 pmWayne, forget that chart you get that info from. Re: Ulster Navy/Rope knife date help
I am sorry, but I don't have any old Ulster catalogs to get an idea of the model number or years of production for your knife. The tang mark was used for at least forty years and likely a little longer. I have collected Ulsters, they are VERY well made knives. Many folks seem to think that when Baer bought Ulster in 1941 the tang mark changed to Ulster USA as post WW2 knives are marked but as I stated all the bone handled Ulster folding knives made for the military during the war seem to carry the older mark as your shows. The earliest mark will have Ulster Dwight Devine and/or Ulster Ellenville NY on the tang.

Thank you very much for your info. I'm going to have a lot of fun getting and learning more about these since they were built right down the road from me.Gunsil wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 10:28 pm I am sorry, but I don't have any old Ulster catalogs to get an idea of the model number or years of production for your knife. Sleight, the shackles on most all of the older (say pre 1935ish) Ulsters I've seen are formed at the pin hole. Like this one:
The shackles with the flat ends like yours started appearing closer to the time of the Baer take-over. Possibly even a bit after. Of course it's possible that it was replaced or added later. Is that a pin below the shackle?
