Another fake Case Tested

Post by Mumbleypeg »

Here’s another counterfeit Case. Looks like new because it is. https://www.ebay.com/itm/304754537951?h ... R7L0tdesYQ

Seller doesn’t give much information. Not sure what it was to begin with but it’s been altered. Original stamps removed and cold stamped “Case Tested XX”. Not Case bone or jigging.

Been up for auction less than a day and already has 10 bids. ::dang::

It’s not real, but most Tested era Case pocket knives do not have pattern numbers. Harold

the C should never touch the A in the blade stamp. Fake stamp on this knife.

The rounded corners of the letters, and the metal pushed up and out around them, are the biggest tells that it was cold stamped. That result makes the C and A touch each other. I suspect if you were to look at the stamp tooling used, they do not touch on it.

Below are samples of honest Case Tested stamps. Note the letters are crisply cut into the metal, and do not appear “mashed” into it. Look at the “E” and other letters - the corners are square, not rounded (the rounding results from the affects of cold stamping where the metal is mashed, not cut, by the stamp).

Only one of these examples is from a near-mint knife. Age and wear can remove some of the crispness of stamps, as can buffing, so all stamps do not have crisp corners like these, but they should not appear mashed into the metal. If you see a supposedly “mint” Tested knife that does not have a crisply cut stamp, proceed with extreme caution. ::nod::

It’s in the about their item section. Nothing in item description but what you showed.

I was going to give the seller the benefit of the doubt, thinking they just didn't know what they are selling. That sneaky hiding "reproduction" in the fine print pushes them into the crook category as far as I'm concerned. ::huff::

123wareagle (1954). The knife can't be both a "Case Tested XX 1920-1940 era knife" and a "reproduction".

I agree that they are being underhanded.
I know that it is a "buyer beware" world, but it makes me want to contact all of the bidders and inform them that it is a fake. I wish we could.

I sent the seller a message two days ago asking whether it was a reproduction or a tested era knife and received no answer.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I'm sure eBay seller 123wareagle is very happy with the $245.50 ending price he got for this "Case Tested XX 1920-1940 Reproduction" turd. I doubt the buyer will be as happy if he ever finds out what he actually got for the money.

Since the title of this thread references Case, you’d probably get a better response to questions about the Western knife if you start a new thread with your question either here or in the Western Collector's forum. Most Western experts aren’t as likely to read your post here. JMO
