How the heck do I close this knife!?!
Cannot for the life of me figure out how this closes. As you can see, it isn’t the guard that releases it / moves the lock tab. Nor is it the deploying button. Only thing I can do is physically pull back the locking tab to release the blade. What am I missing?!

It may be a swivel bolster release. Holding the knife in your right hand, try pushing down on the bolster extension on the left side with your thumb.

The guard doesn’t move at all. You can see that the handle design would prevent it, there’s no room for the swivel of it.
Just noticed that I have another pick lock just like this. Can’t close it unless I pull the lock tab on the back of the knife back, which doesn’t seem like the way they’d design it.

It’s a pick lock design. It’s made to work exactly as you describe. Theres a bit more info here

Cool horn on that 13" M. Italy, the way you described getting it unlocked is how it is intended as a picklock.

That's only for "swivel bolster" models Gary, on picklocks the "ears" won't budge, since the end of the cover is squared and wouldn't have any room to "swivel" the entire bolster. On swivel bolsters the end of the cover is cut on a slant to allow movement.

Also, picklocks are generally considered more valuable than swivels.

Re: How the hell do I close this knife!?!
hey awesome knife you have it is a mauro mario made italian stiletto made in 1950's up to early 1960's , (M.Italy inox) was one of many stamps used by the mauro mario company that was headed by Angelo Campolin SR, the knife was made before they made swivel bolster stiletto's , some people call them picklocks because you have to pick or pull lock-tab back to close blade the correct term is ( lock-tab release) , you walk up to any older knife sellers at a knife show and ask them if they ever heard of term (picklock) and 99% will tell you no never heard the term now you tell them your looking for older lock-tab release stiletto boom they know what you are talking about , the term picklock seems to be more used online than at a knife or gun show.

Man.. thanks to all of you for the info. When I was reading “picklock” I was NOT thinking you pick the lock of the knife.
I’ve got two other picklocks. Love the 8” with two tone handle.
