VN veterans day.

Welcome to AAPK's Veteran’s Forum. This is a place where veterans can meet, get to know one another better, perhaps swap a story or two, and share any recent information that they have acquired from the Veterans Administration, DoD and Veterans Service Organizations, including but not limited to, DAV, AMVETS, VFW, American Legion, PVA, and MOPH. Another good source of information are branch specific organizations.
We will have a voluntary CHECKING IN topic where you can introduce yourself, years serve and branch or branches of service. Welcome Aboard!

You're right. We're all getting long in the tooth and going down hill like a bat out of hell. We landed at Da Nang on August 31st of 1965, almost 53 years ago.Sometimes it feels almost like yesterday until I look in the mirror. Welcome home all my brothers.

Addendum:
Neglected to add that I left the country on Monday, August 21st 1966. My freedom bird was a beautiful baby s... yellow Braniff Airlines 707. Landed on Okinawa and spent the rest of the week there. Departed on Friday August 25th at noon. Stopped to refuel at Honolulu and landed at El Toro Marine Corps Air Base on Friday at 10 AM, 2 hours before we left Okinawa. (international Date Line ya know}

I came in country in July of 67 and flew out in June of 68. Leaving was nice and it was nice to come home.
Welcome home to all that made it out.

Hey Ridgegrass, what were the guns in the 1/14? About the 1st of June I was swapped from the 4th Div, 155 SP, as were a guy from each gun, FDC, etc to the 5/22 of Americal, 175 SP guns. The idea was to spread out rotations so every body wasnt rotating at the same time as happened to units the previous year. 5/22 was 175 guns and we swapped out those tubes for new 8 inch tubes, much more accurate and not shot out.
I am thinking we were at 1 time around 1/14?? were you 105 towed? The 5/22nd was pretty green when I got there. Mainly had a permanent fire base at The Oasis. kind of easy time. When with the 5/16th my gun was mostly dedicated to hip shoots so we were moving often.

I caught a baby monkey near The Oasis and she became the battery mascot. wanted to fetch her home but way too much paperwork and expense.

Rob: 1/14 was mostly 105 towed. I was sent TDY to MACV north of Chu Lai and the 14th may have added a few 155's in some of the batteries. I was an FO and liaison for our MACV team so I wasn't near the batteries much except the one in their base camp when I'd visit and they were 105's. Our MACV team somehow ( :D ) wound up with a jeep-mounted recoiless. We gave it to an RF/PF Vietnamese unit and they did a lot of damage to their buildings with it's back blast. Kinda funny.
I had access to any local artillery wherever our team was operating and they could be 105,155,175,8 inch, and even 4.2 mortars if necessary. At the time I really liked artillery. Still do.
Don't know where the Oasis was? We were based in Chu Lai, MACV and Ly Tin. O'.

Well damn, the Oasis is about 24 klicks sw of Pleiku, I thoght we were north of there. I guess the Cav first settled in there. It was a pretty secure location, until late TET and I was gone from there. Ya know, in 50 some years Ive hardly talked to anyone who was in the fight. Honestly, you are the closest compadre ive come across.
