Case Congress knife with 2 different year blades

I was at the flea market this weekend and saw a Case Congress knife that had a 1975 blade on main blade and on the other side had a blade with 1974 stamping. A older man there told me that this was a transitional knife, and that they were very rare. I have never heard of this and was curious if anyone has ever seen one like this or if maybe the blade had been replaced. It was odd ,but the stamping was on the back side, showing the date code.
My first thought was the blades had been replaced, but if that was the case the stamping would not have been on the backside.
I was going to take a picture, but a collector was there, and he grabbed a knife and bought it before anyone could hardly look at. He was the one that said it was a transitional knife and that it was very rare and worth lots of money.

Based on your description the older man is right, it is called a transition knife. However although not seen every day, they’re not all that uncommon either. In fact there are some made just about every year. Some collectors will pay a premium for transition knives. You’ll also see them on other Case patterns having more than one “master” blade - Congress and Muskrat patterns.

At the turn of each year they stamp out a batch of blades having that new year’s date code. They don’t throw out last year’s blades, and they don’t make an effort to match the years of both blades. They issue out to assembly what blades are in stock. Therefore, for a few days (until all last year’s stock is consumed) knives are made having blades from two different years. Another peculiarity is that on some patterns not made every year you will find knives having blades that are several years apart.

I wasn't aware of that either, and usually shied away from knives with mis-matched blade years. And then saw a dealer once at a show referring to it as a "Transition Knife". He knew more about older Case knives than me, so I accepted his explanation, although I've still never bothered with buying one. Really they don't seem to bring much more $ than the same pattern with matched blades, so I don't think they are a ton more valuable. And I've seen them often enough to say they aren't super rare either. They do always seem to be from the 70's or 80's though. I can't recall ever seeing newer congress with mis-matched blade year stamps.

I had several 64052 pattern congress knives from the 70s that had different year stamps a few years ago, but they have since been sold. One of them even had a one dot 79 stamp on one blade and 10 dot 80 stamp on another. I may still have some pictures and will post later if I can find them.

If you are a pattern collector, they are very valuable and willing to pay a premium for them

He only wanted $90 and I walked off and figured it was such a deal I should go back and dang it was gone fast.
It was way worth the money, but I have found so many deals at flea market I was being cheap
