Sheffield Inspired custom lambsfoot

Post by ashwinearl »

Hi,
I wanted to share a knife I am in progress of making. It is inspired by a classic Sheffield pattern. This is made out of 8670 carbon steel, stainless steel liners/bolsters/shield, bronze washers. The engraving is made using a diamond scratch bit on a manual pantograph. The scratch is made on top of a resist and then I use my electro etch machine.

There is a reason that many people collect those old Sheffield knives: Useful, simple design, elegant, and beautiful.

Your knife captures all of that! Great job!

Gorgeous knife. Excellent looking work you do, kudos for that, my hat is off. Great lines and materials too. What a piece. Are you selling and what do you want for one? Would love a knife like that. PM me if you're selling. Thanks for showing, love seeing stuff like that one. Wow.

Finished up some custom leather slips. I used my diamond scratch bit in my Gravograph engraver on the leather and came out with a neat effect of lettering the leather. The slips are a little on the tight side though. The green one shown here again shows after sharpening on a Wicked edge.

Thanks for all the nice comments. There is some magic in these ones as they came out closer to my vision than others have. I look for any excuse to make use of my engraver and the classic lettering on the these knives just screamed to try out scratch engraving+ electro etch on the blade.

I will surely make some more, as the interest in them has been great. Maybe I found the right intersection of what I'm interested and capable of, low supply, and high demand? I'm focused on improvement first, selling second. The good thing is that slip joint buyers want stainless and want higher-end covers like stag, ironwood, vintage micarta, jigged bone. This is helping motivate me to move into those materials and improve my processes. A mill is planned soon, so that will elevate my nail nicks and enable milled liners.

These are all spoken for, but I am making more shortly. Let me know what you are interested in in terms of bolster, bolster/endcaps, shadow pattern, shield/no shield, cover material, preferred steel? I'm in carbon steel now, but getting ready to jump into CPM 154 stainless.
