JFK, sixty years ago today.
Most of us old guys remember well where we were 60 years ago today. ( I was in my high school foundry class when a friend rushed in and said, "They killed the President".) Seems like that tragic event led to so many other things, like it was a turning point in our American culture. Beginning with the mass murder if 8 nurses in Chicago, the Texas tower shootings, the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, etc. Not that bad things didn't happen before hand, but certainly not with the frequency and intensity of the following years and up until today. I'm a baby boomer and lived in not the best neighborhood in Baltimore. Things were peaceful then; any murder, even in a major city, was "front page" news. What's normal today was certainly abnormal and shocking back then.
Anyway, where did that 60 years go ?! Just taking this anniversary to reflect. J.O'.

Re: JFK, sixty years ago today.
I was in the 6th grade in the local rural country school. The janitor at the school had a supply room office downstairs in the school and had a radio there where he was the first to hear the news. He came upstairs and told the principal, who went to each classroom (2 grades in each classroom, plus high school rooms) and made the announcement. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and all the kids went to the auditorium where a TV was set up for everyone to watch.

Strange there was little mention in the media. Well not really I suppose. If you asked a person under 30 today, they likely wouldn't even know who the hell JFK was! JMHO.

I was in Basic Electronics school at MCRD San Diego. It was noon chow time and me and a couple other guys were walking across the Grinder (parade field) on our way to chow when a fella coming meeting us says "Didja hear that Kennedy has been shot?". Unbelieveable!!

Surprising to me how many younger people don't believe there was even a world before the day they were born.knife7knut wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 6:03 am Strange there was little mention in the media. Re: JFK, sixty years ago today.
I just came across this post today, and to give you an idea of how big this news really was, I was a 10 yr. old Canadian kid and I remember it as clearly as if it were yesterday. My Mom was crying and when I asked her why, she said someone has shot that nice man, John Kennedy the US president, then pulled me into her and hugged me so hard I thought I'd pass-out. My Dad was pacing the floor with a concerned look on his face all the while trying to calm my Mom.
JFK was beloved by many people, and his assassination affected them all even us dumb ole' Canucks, and there is yet to be another like him, nor is there likely to be anytime soon.

I was reminded of another long-term happening that's coming up soon, J.O'., and it's that SNL/Saturday Night Live will have been on the air for 50/Fifty years next year.
I was 22 in 1975 when the first show aired, and hearing that sure made me feel old.
Not really JFK worthy, but happening just the same.
Oh, and JFYI, it's "CanadiAn", not "CanadiEn".
Sorry buddy, just my OCD/ADHD/LGBTQ+/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP/#%&*+$@/ acting up again!

I don't speak or understand a word of French, J.O'., but from your reply I'm gleaning that someone somewhere sometimes spells Canadian with an "e", oui?

I'll bet it's been 40 years since I watched it.Madmarco wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 9:03 pm I was reminded of another long-term happening that's coming up soon, J.O'., and it's that SNL/Saturday Night Live will have been on the air for 50/Fifty years next year.

Yep, me to, Ken.
I read recently that the content back then was much raunchier than it is now, so at least we saw the good stuff.

Re: JFK, sixty years ago today.
Don't know about raunchier, but I am guessing that a character like Chico Escuela would be frowned upon by today's standards.
Can you still call a woman an ignorant slut on TV/2023?

I wonder how many guys, after watching Dan Akroyd use that line repeatedly, were stupid enough to use it on their wife or girlfriend?

Re: JFK, sixty years ago today.
Having not watched the show for a long time, Ike, I'm not familiar with who Chico Escuela is or what he says and does, but if you're singling him out here I'll assume his behavior is raunchy beyond acceptable limits, which is now tempting me to tune-in just to see how bad this guy really is, should be fun!
And although I don't know about TV/2023 standards, to my way of thinking and I'm sure yours also, it's NEVER been alright to address any woman in that manner and certainly not to her face, even though many of them are exactly that, unless of course you'll enjoy the resulting slap/punch in the face! That's why they made Men's Locker Rooms! lol!

Thanks for the flashback, buddy!

Marco... Not to get into too much conspiracy FACT* .... however, it has been revealed that Ted Cruz's CUBAN dad was involved in the assassination .... shortly thereafter Ted Cruz's CUBAN dad moved to.... JESUS H. FUDGE you guys, rein in the idiocy a little bit !
Y'all turned a somber, respectful post about a great man into some ridiculous, way-the-hell-off-topic, complete nonsense!
Going off subject is nothing new around here, but it seems certain participants are consistently going out of their way
to derail as many topics as possible .... and it's getting pretty darn old!
