Robeson Barlow

This is yet another rescue from the $1 box at the flea market. It is a Robeson 521179 Barlow. As you can see from the before pictures it was in tough shape, very rusty, saw cut bone handle had been broken and repaired with what looks like JB Weld. The master blade was also bent to the point that it would not close correctly. First order of business was to try to straighten the blade. I did that first in case it was hardened to the point that it wouldnt straighten or it would break. It took a good shot with the hammer right on the word Robeson on the tang stamp, but it straightened right up without breaking. Since I had recently come into a good stock of stag as shown on another thread, that was used to replace the handle material. The Scotchbright Radial wheel cleaned off all the rust. It was re assembled and the crooked blade edge from improper sharpening was straightened up. The liners are brass, bolsters and pins are steel, so it was repinned with coat hanger wire. There's nothing like a stag handled Barlow. Ready to go now and riding in my pocket.

I'm just curious, why do you use coat hanger wire for pins? I always use steel nails when I'm repinning knives with steel or cast iron bolsters. Is there an advantage to the coat hanger wire?

I use coat hanger wire because it is soft enough to peen easily. and the size is right, in this case the wire used was .086". Coat hanger wire usually has a paint or some other coating on it which has to be removed by chucking it in the drill and working it with some sandpaper. I also have some bicycle spoke wire, which runs .079". No real advantage other than I have a lot of it and it is easy to find.
