Help with Identification

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

Help with Identification

Post by KaminskiJL »

Hello,

I came to this forum hoping that sombody can identify this Gerber multitool. I can;t tell you anything about it except that it probably dates back to the early 2000's. Any help with identification will be greatly appreciated.

Can you please provide a picture of the entire multitool? The closeups are good with certain details. But seeing how it all fits together will help as well!

I know very little about Gerber Multi Tools but that one sure reminds me of the early multi tools that Leatherman sold.

In fact, that was the whole reason behind it. Gerber wanted to compete with Leatherman for a contract to replace the Demo knife for standard issue in the early '90s, and what they came up with, the "Military Provisional Tool" (or MPT for short) was, for all effective purposes, basically a copy. They won, and the rest is history. Later, the versions with sliding pliers were introduced, and eventually evolved into what we have today.

Definitely a USA made Gerber. 💯 Is that what you're asking?

Cody,

Sorry for being forum "illiterate". I didn't understand the underlined 100 in your reply. Based on your earlier reply I was asking if you thought that the Gerber multitool was, in fact, a military issue Gerber Multipurpose Tool (MPT) from the early 1990's.

I’m pretty sure that means he is 100% confident in his answer (that it was made in USA).
