Schrade Identification

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade Identification

Post by Yossarian229 »

Hello!

My wife's grandfather just gifted me a knife from his (extensive) collection but he wasn't sure where or when he obtained it.

I'd like to be able to talk to him a little bit more about it's history so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The handles appear to be the same as what was used on the '88(?) Duck stamp knife, which was a trapper with a gut hook secondary. They may have had some kind of special order where they used the same handles with the regular trapper blade layout but I think it's also possible that it was put together with spare parts and either sold at the factory store or as an end of days knife. Looks good!

Eric, or one of several other Schrade gurus probably know when the SCHRADE+ stamp was first used. It was relatively recent compared to the long history of Schrade.

In this case the handles date the knife more than the stamp. They're goncalo alves and as far as I know the only smooth bolstered trapper Schrade used that material on was the 1988-89 Duck Stamp knife with the bird hook secondary. The blades could have been from any time around that period. The knife was made after 1988 but when I don't know. Could have been anywhere from 1988 to 2004.

Thanks everyone for your help and insights. Very interesting stuff.

If you'd like, I can try to get some pictures of some of his collection - He had a whole binder labelled "Schrade".
