Protech Brend 2

Post by maestromurphy »

Howdy-
I’m new here and hope to hear of people’s experience with the Protech Brend 2. I’d also love if anyone knows where I might find one, preferably black with burled maple on the handle. It seems like just the knife to have in the ole pocket. Thanks for any help!

Hey Murph, ::welcome:: to AAPK! ::handshake:: Regarding the knife you like, I don't know anything about that particular model, but I own their "Don" and "Don+", "Mike Allen cover release", and "Godfather" models and all are well made, fast action quality knives. I saw some online, but none of the model you want, which should tell you they are good knives cuz everyone wants them. Keep checking this thread for more answers, perhaps someone will know where to get them. Good luck and remember, Google is your friend! ::groove::

Finding one is going to be difficult.

You're best chances are to watch various knife forums and vendor sites where a pre-owned one might get put up for sale. But you could be in for a long wait and a lot of searching.

Arizona Customs (online knife consignment shop) sold one just like you described back in September of this year. They sold one in 2023 (with Damascus blade), and they sold one in 2021. So, three in the past 4 years can give you an idea of how infrequently they show up for sale.

Others places to keep an eye on that sell pre-owned switchblades are Apple Valley Knives and Lathams Vintage Knives.

I believe PVK.com sometimes sells pre-owned switchblades as well.

Basically you're looking for a "unicorn", and like I said it could take years and a lot of internet searching to find one.

But who knows, you might get lucky and come across one. Good luck :) .

Thanks so much!

I looked over this usknivesdepot site and the deals seemed maybe too good to be true. A quick google search for site reviews popped up quite a few sites indicating usknivesdepot was a scam site!! I hope it isn’t a scam, but I think I’ll hold out for a little more tried and true shop. Do you have previous experience with usknivesdepot? I definitely don’t mean to poopoo a site based merely on reviews and not your experience!!

Again, thanks very much!!

I looked at the recommended site this morning and I said to myself “too good to be true”. Who sells new Medfords for under $100, nobody but a crook. Caveat emptor

I know nothing about that Webstore, it just popped up on a Google search for that particular knife. It could most definitely be like DHGate. 😉

IMHO, I'd say WORSE than DHGate, John, at least from DHG you actually receive your knives, from usknivesdepot one would be lucky to not have your computer AND credit cards compromised, besides never receiving your knives. Also IMHO, when almost EVERY knife listed has the same or similar price of around $100. no matter what knife, what you're looking at is a couple of bored kids somewhere decided to setup a scam site and see how many Benjamins they can scoop before the heat starts and they scedaddle with your cash, and you can be certain they have zero inventory to drag along with them as they figure out their next scam! ::facepalm::
You've received some good advise here, Murph, what Killgar said should be most helpful to you cuz it's very useful to me, thanks for that, KG! I was aware of Lathams Knives since I'd purchased a knife from him, but I was not aware of www.applevalleyknives.com , and that site is much like Lathams with both sites having a treasure trove of auto knives, old and new. APVK.com has nearly 1,500 knives listed but Lathams I don't know off the top of my head, suffice to say it's a lot. I browsed www.pvk.com and they had 1 "Brend 2" listed, but it has cocobolo covers. ArizonaCK.com is also a great place for referencing, but bring lots of money if you're thinking about buying.
The bottom-line I'd say, Murph, is to buckle-down kick-up your feet and sharpen your typing fingers, cuz you're going to be doing some online searching! Welcome to the club, man, ::handshake:: howdya like us so far? ::shrug:: ::hmm::

EDIT: It seems the "Brend 2" I saw at pvk.com has ben sold, and I forgot to mention that they have some Ganzo/Firebird models listed for anyone wanting to top-up their Ganzo/Firebird collection! ::hmm::

You're quite welcome my friend :) .

In regards to Apple Valley Knives, although I've never had reason to buy from them, that site is owned and operated by Mark Erickson, a well-known figure in the switchblade world and the author of the book "Antique American Switchblades". So it's definitely a legitimate site.

EDIT: Thanks for catching my typo MM ::tu:: .

On the topic of spotting fake scam sites, there are several tell-tale signs to look for-

1. An abundance of rare, discontinued, hard to find, high-dollar knives advertised for sale NEW, typically with the word "Sale" over them, and being sold for incredibly low prices.

2. The pictures of the knives have the BladeHQ logo behind them. For some reason many scam sites take their pics directly from BladeHQ.

3. The companies phone number is either a fake or it also belongs to other websites selling stuff, sometimes completely unrelated stuff. You can Google phone numbers.

4. The companies address is fake, and/or it also belongs to other websites selling stuff, sometimes completely unrelated stuff. You can also Google addresses.

I looked at usknivesdepot.com and they ticked numbers 1 and 4 on my list. I Googled their posted address but came up with nothing.

I recently checked a site selling butterfly knives that someone asked about on another forum, and the phone number of the butterfly knife site matched a website for a business in a different state claiming to sell lemon flavored cookies (no doubt another scam site).

It's always good to do your research, and perhaps ask before you buy, rather than lose your money.

Thanks for the head's-up, KG, ::handshake:: I pretty much figured the same as I was browsing. In case you care, you typed "quire" instead of "quite" and there should be time to change if you wish to do so. Sorry bout' my nit-picking, my ADT brain has control of me!

Great info, KG, I was aware of # 1 but not #'s 2,3,4, so I can watch for those now, too. ::tu::
