WESTCO BOULDER COLO Jack Knife

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

WESTCO BOULDER COLO Jack Knife

Post by knifeaholic »

I just got this knife, searching on AAPK I only find this tang stamp on fixed blade knives. What is the story on this one - 3-1/4" premium jack. To me it looks like it was made by Utica.

The model number is X265 from 1941.

"X" for assorted colors
2 for 2 blades
65 for pattern #65

The other options that year were X2265 for composition pearl handles and X6265 for bone stag handles.

We can identify it to the 1941 run because the pen blade is on the shield side of the knife.

The 1936-1940 version had the main blade on the shield side.

Actual manufacturer could be Western, Utica, Case, Union (Kabar) or others as Western had knives made by other cutlery companies, as did all the other cutlery companies. They were one big incestuous lot back then. No records remain to identify who made what for who.

Thanks for the info. I have seen WEST-CUT and WESTACO, but I did not know that WESTCO was alsoa Western tang stamp.

WESTCO is relatively rare, probably limited to a "value line" from 1941 only.

WESTACO was a 1936-1940 line.

Both were folder lines.
