Northfield un X ld Fake?
Hi folks
Trying to learn here and hoping some of you experienced knife sleuths can help take a few bumps out of the road for me.
Here we have a claimed Northfield un x ld. Stamp looks like maybe shaved down tang and applied? Not sure though. Letters look kind of sharp but a bit to neat for the age? Blade seems out of place? Seems like it should be a spear point or maybe that is just more common. Obviously someone has messed with the pin. I have re-pinned a knife but not sure why it looks like someone was using a pointed punch here? Is that some sort of technique or just a bad choice of tool? Let me know what you think. I love hearing people pick these apart or confirm a great old knife.

I would guess that someone was trying to get rid of the "light wobble".Cabphoto wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 4:04 pm Hi folks

From what I can see it appears to be a nice Northfield jack with hole in it.

Thanks Joe!
I appreciate that. That makes sense. Do you think it had a bail originally or that hole could be a modification?

A knife from that period normally would have both blades with a tang stamp.

I would avoid buying a knife of this age just based on the secondary blade not being stamped in any way. There is also a curvature in the back of the pen blade that looks like it was done to make the back spine of the blade match the backspring when opened fully.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

This seller has put up some good knives and some VERY questionable Case knives. Seller is liquidating a collection so thay may not know the difference.

I believe you are correct Steve. I sent the seller a message about a problemed description in a listing they had. The seller changed the listing based on what I had said and explained that selling knives was not their forte.knifeaholic wrote: ↑Fri May 30, 2025 4:00 pm This seller has put up some good knives and some VERY questionable Case knives. Many times, the stamp on the secondary blade will be more visible since it doesn't get opened an closed as much.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!
