Case’s Fly Fishing Knife - Krusius

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case’s Fly Fishing Knife - Krusius

Post by AliRow »

I picked up this Case’s Fly Fishing knife with tang stamp dated 1920-1940 and noticed a Krusius Brothers stamp on the scissors component. Could this be part of original manufacturing or an added component?

Someone here may know the answer, or may have seen this before. However it is unlikely that Case has any records from that long ago to verify or refute it being something they did. Cutleries often sourced parts from other cutleries, especially if the component they needed was not something commonly made in-house. Not worth the cost to tool up to make a component that was not going to be used on a volume pattern or patterns. I have read for example that some versions of file blades were outsourced, so why not scissors? It’s also not uncommon to outsource the entire knife, and have the outsourcing company’s stamp put on it. Case has been known to have done so on several patterns, which carry the Case tang stamp but were made elsewhere.

From the pictures you provided I see no glaring indication the knife has been apart. The pin holding the scissors may be peened differently than the other pins, but I can’t say conclusively that it’s different. ::shrug:: Someone else may see something but without the knife in-hand I’m not able to tell anything else based on pictures.

Wow!! Very interesting. I have never seen that before, but I agree with Ken. If the scissors fits properly and if there are no indications that the knife has been apart, then Case likely outsourced the scissors to Krusius.

Case definitely did a similar thing with some file blades in the 1960's - you will find some M279 F and 8364 patterns where the file blade is stamped GERMANY.

I have this example. Although it doesn't have the charm and older stamp of the original post knife It's one I'm glad to have.

The measure on that knife is the right size to measure some of the trout that I have caught.
