Knives still made in Germany?

Post by Mark Lightner »

I know this comes up every few years, but are there still any companies actually making knives in Germany? I know of Boker, but any others? Thanks in advance

not entirely true, Boker knives are manufactured in several locations, including Solingen, Germany, Argentina, Taiwan, China, Italy, and the United States. The specific line of Boker knives determines its manufacturing location. For example, Boker Manufaktur Solingen knives are made in Solingen, Germany, while Boker Plus knives are made in Taiwan, China, Italy, and the USA,

To my knowledge the maker of Eye Brand, Carl Schlieper, went bankrupt and ceased operations in the 1990s. Someone bought the rights to the name and had knives stamped Eye Brand made in Germany by Olbertz. Olbertz was making several other brands also at that time but I do not know the current status of Olbertz.

There is a dedicated Eye Brand forum here on AAPK viewforum.php?f=127

Where are Boker Plus knives made in the USA? Does someone make them on contract or do they have their own factory?

There is a seller on eBay that sells what appear to be newly made German Eye knives made in Solingen. New knives, not "new old stock". They are high $$ and the seller usually has multipes of each one. Try an eBay search, I forget the name of the seller.

Also look at the web site of Post Oak Knife Company in Texas - they seem to be the current importer of Eye Brand. However, almost every knife on their site is labeled "out of stock", at least every time I have looked.

I guess I was thinking about how in 1984 United Boker formed with Smoky Mountain Knife and Blue Ridge Knife to create a financial sales partnership and in 1986 Boker USA reformed and established sales offices and warehousing in Colorado.

Yes, the United-Boker knives were a short-lived line - made in Solingen but a step down in fit/finish from the regular Boker line - to be sold at a lower price point.

Boker's original USA factory in Maplewood NJ closed I think in the late 70's, The corporate owner - Cooper Group - I believe moved production to Georgia. That was short lived and Cooper ceased all relationship with Boker in about 1984-85. That was when the Colorado office opened - AFAIK still there today.
