Eagle Scout

Post by C-WADE7 »

Last night my youngest son went before the board and was officially approved to have earned his Eagle rank!!! He will be 18 next month and has drug his heels for 1.5 years since his project was approved, giving me great anxiety lol. I’m very proud of him, as Dad and Scout Master , and I’m now the father of two Eagle Scout.

Congratulations to the entire Wade family and the Troop leaders that facilitated a successful journey. Now you’ll have to replace this bumper sticker:

Several years ago I had lunch with the V.P. of Human Resources of a well-known Dallas, TX based company. The subject of Scouting came up.

He said they receive several hundred job applicants every month, most of which go into the trash. But any that say Eagle Scout automatically go into the stack to be reviewed again. He said if they’re Eagle Scouts they know how to set goals, make plans, achieve those plans, and lead others. Eagle Scouts have demonstrated those and other valuable skills other applicants may or may not have.

Tell him to put Eagle Scout on his resumè and future job applications.

back when I was a Scoutmaster we would call them “cardiac kids” because that’s what they caused to both their parents and the Troop leaders :)

^^^Perfect description.

I was the District's Eagle Board representative for several years. We had a few Eagle Boards just days before 18th birthdays...Yikes! We had two twins....one had his Eagle Board maybe six months before their 18th, the other just a week or two before. That mom and dad had to be sweating that one. BTW, the latter twin was off to West Point not long after their 18th.

The scoutmaster of the troop our boys were in, an Eagle Scout himself and father of 3 boys, emphasized earning Eagle before turning 16. I doubt the kids realized why at the time but his theory was that’s when they are legally able to get a driver’s license. After that their focus turns to cars, relative “freedom”, and the opposite sex. (Not necessarily in that order!) It’s hard enough to complete the Eagle requirements without all the distractions. After 16 it’s a lot harder to get them focused.

If a scout wasn’t really interested in attaining Eagle, he didn’t push it on them. If they were, he mentored them to get everything done. Those scouts left every scoutmaster conference with a jointly developed “to do” list. When they went to summer camp every year they were signed up for rank advancement activities they needed, but hadn’t completed yet. The scouts had to do the work, but he was great at gently “steering”. Before they were 16 typically the only thing left incomplete on the BSA requirements list was their Eagle service project.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, and Tom “The Fumes” is a common phrase in our Troop. I have witnessed it overcome some good scouts over the years. I have 2 more young men very close to Eagle in the troop that we are working with(the advancement coordinator and I, the Scoutmaster) to try to get their project plans filled out and turned in so they can complete their rank this year hopefully.

Our Troop Committee had a saying that the three "Ps" were the demise of many potential Eagle Scouts.
