Hunter XX-CHNGR

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

While you are shopping for blades remember this:

I've forgotten what year blade stock thickness changed. If my memory is good Changers were introduced in 1987 and the thin blades lasted a couple years. All the Changer blades I've seen had date codes.

So looks like the the ones I’ve asked about in the store want fit mine as mine has a long nail pull and looks like a x and dots knife, the blades in the store are nail niks so probably thinner :(

Mine came today , sadly no pouch or blades , just the drop point on it , surface rust will come off easily and a lot of it is grime ::tu::

Paul, based on the position of the dots and X’s yours is a year 2000 model. And you are correct, blades with a conventional nail nick (rather than a long pull) are from the first year, 1987, and from 1988. By 1989 Case had switched to the long pull blades. Not sure if that was a “running change” transition in 1988, or introduced with the 1989 stamp. ::shrug:: Steve Pfeiffer might know.

Also of note as stated in an earlier post in this thread, there is a “light weight” version of the XX-Changer having Zytel covers, made for a few years. For whatever reason, you don’t see many of those.

Here’s a picture of a first year (1987) XX-Changer from knifedb.com showing the nail nick, and a Zytel LT-Weight version. Both pictures from knifedb.com (not my knives).

Did you notice it has no nail pulls ? This is from a 1987 magazine so perhaps early prototype?

Did other manufacturers make a knife like this I may have seen one of these in my father’s stuff . His favorites were Remington but he also had has some nice case also. If it is okay I will post a couple of pictures of a nice 6465 green bone knife he found somewhere.

I'd love to see pictures of your dad's four blade Folding Hunter. They're scarce, old and not within my budget. Rather than being burried at the end of this thread it deserves its own thread.

Maybe by this time next week I'll remember one but offhand I can't think of another folding knife that takes interchangeable blades like Case's XXChanger. There are sereral interchangeable blade knives that do not fold. A well known one is Kershaw's Blade Trader.

Me, too! I’ve got a couple of the changers. Earlier this year, I was watching for one on evilBay, and a couple of them finally came up for auction. Both had the “Make Offer” option, so I placed a respectable offer on the nicer one, and a “lowball” offer on the other, never expecting to hear back on either of them. Much to my surprise the next morning, I was the new owner of two (2) changers. See attached photos. One came with the box and all its associated paperwork. I got lucky and got the sheath and blades for both.
