Real deal ??

Winchester entered the knife market as a manufacturer in 1919 by acquiring two existing knife companies; Eagle Knife Co. of Connecticut & Napanoch Knife Co. of New York. Winchester stepped away from the market in 1942 to focus on war related manufactured products, but re-entered in the late 1980s by licensing its name to Blue Grass Cutlery. Blue Grass had high quality knives made by Queen Cutlery that featured the Winchester brand name for a handful of years until the license arrangement ran its course. Winchester eventually started licensing to other companies & now you will find the brand name used by several knife manufacturers by way of license agreements.

Real deal ??

Post by dobro59 »

I have winchester coffin bolster jack #2513. Saw on youtube about a winchester coffin bolster jack #2921, it also has winchester ink on main blade, and
"87 under 2921 model number. I think made by bluegrass.
Mine just has regular tang stamp and 2513 on pile side of tang. I'm thinking i might have an original from back in the day??

If you would, please post pictures of your knife.
Several clear, in-focus pictures from straight-on (not from add angles) of the knife from every side can really help identify the knife.

The pattern number 2513 seems a bit strange for a Winchester knife but as Reverend said, without pictures you won't get a good answer.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I have a 1930 Simmons catalog reprint, which also includes a Winchester catalog reprint. There is no 2513 listed. There is a 2921 listed, and it is a coffin jack.

My Winchester catalog reprint is 58 pages - 6 to 8 knives per page - plus a list of their patterns. There is no 2513 shown. In fact there are no 25xx patterns listed or shown.

My Winchester collectors book also shows the 2921 swell center 3 and 1/2 inch jack as does the Voyles book. They both show the pivot end bolster as having a rope border. No number 2513 is shown in either. Definitely need to see some pictures.

Just fund this, looks like the OP knife, buy doesn't show a model number.

Thanks for posting some pictures. My opinion FWIW is it’s a newer knife, not an original made by Winchester. Could be one of the ”black box” Winchesters made after late 1980s by Blue Grass Cutlery. ::shrug::

Here is a page from the list of old Winchester pattern numbers from the catalog reprint. Note there were no 24XX or 25XX series patterns. Also I’m posting a chart showing how to interpret pattern numbers for knives made by Winchester. In Winchester patterns the number 4 is genuine pearl and 5 is Cocobolo or other wood. Apparently there was no “9”. Again just a guess but if you have a knife stamped Winchester with a 24XX or 25XX pattern on it, it apparently wasn’t made by Winchester.

Hope that helps someone.

I’m inclined to believe that the statement “some exceptions have been discovered” in one of those pages in the catalog applies here. If you do a Google search for “Winchester 2921 Coffin Jack” a whole bunch of them pop up. There is even an old sale ad from the AAPK store in my search.

2921 appears to be the standard model number for the bone handled Black Box Coffin Jack.

I haven’t got a clue about the OP’s model 2513 except that it looks exactly like the 2921.

Don't know why it doesn't have date stamp. I thought most bluegrass had dates?

The catalog is pre-1940 knives. Below is the 2921 pattern shown in it.

It has nothing about the “black box” Winchesters. That is a whole nuther deal. ::handshake::

My guess is that it is one of the Bluegrass reproduction knives that was given a new pattern number to separate it from the repros. The dark bone and jigging looks right for the reproduction. Quite unusual for a Winchester jack to have the secondary blade in back of the master. I suppose that was done to again separate the knife from the repros.
