Schrade Cut Co Jack to Easy Opener

I debated where to start this topic, in the Customized or Repaired knives.
I opted for Customized, as there was maybe a bit more customizing in it than restoration.

I actually have a before pic on this one, (patting myself on the back for remembering).

The handle was scratched and the blade had grooves from top to bottom as if someone had used a grinder (Dremel) to attempt to thin the blade or maybe to sharpen?

I removed the broken pen blade and reassembled the knife as a single blade.
There was a tremendous amount of sanding that went into getting the grooves (mostly) out of the blade, also a lot of sanding of the bolsters and polishing of the celluloid. There is also a ding in the celluloid near the pile side rocker pin.

It has such unique celluloid I thought it was worth saving.
I also decided to make it an easy opener.
This knife is as sharp as a scalpel!

What do you think?
Would carry such a knife?

I haven't decided if I will take this to the show and sell it, or EDC it.
It is super sharp, but it has a stronger snap than I really like.

Dale, are you sure those handles are Celluloid? From Illinois they look like horn but you know how bad my eyes are getting. Or is it how bad your eyes are getting? I can never seem to get that straight.

My eyes are bad. I went to the VA for an eye exam the 3rd of November 2011. They said I would get the glasses in about 9 weeks. Todays is March 9th, 2012 and still no glasses. I called them this week and they said the new lab had a software malfunction and they are trying to get the contractor to fix it. They said my prescription was not lost; it is just that their brand new lab doesn’t work. The guy also told me there were people who had their prescriptions written in August or September who are still waiting for their new glasses.
I hope I get them before my November 2012 eye exam appointment.

So to answer your question, yes, my eyes are bad, but when I polished the handles there was absolutely no mistaking the distinct odor of celluloid!
When I bought it on ebay the seller said he thought it was horn, but I have worked with plenty of horn and it smells entirely different than celluloid.

And once your new glasses show up, you still have to take them to Walmart or someplace to get them adjusted (unless you do that sort of thing yourself). I guess it's a small price to pay for 'free' glasses.

Okay, you're the guy with the knife in hand so you would know. It's such a shame the Celluloid can be so unstable. There is so much they can do with it. Making it look like horn is just astounding. If the stuff were stable, I would be a big time Celluloid collector. Since it's not I think I've divested myself of all Celluloid except one or maybe two and am avoiding it like the plague for new purchases.
