clip blade clicks on liner when opening

Post by brax71 »

I picked up a kutmaster branded stockman a couple weeks back. As I just start to open the clip blade the slight sideways pressure from my nail in the nick pushes the blade against the liner and as it clears the brass of the liner, the blade audibly clicks as it slides sideways.
At first i thought the blade might just be bent, but without really 'going to town,' i wasn't able to bend it enough to keep it from clicking.
I also tried tapping the pin, thinking that maybe the blade was just too loose -- no dice there either.
Any other ideas? thanks!!

Pretty confusing without a picture. I looked at my stockmans, I do not have a Kutmaster, and all mine push away from the liner when using the thumbnail to open. does it hit the liner when closing?

Return it.
Unfortunately, Utica/Kutmaster's quality isn't what you receive in other knives.

Is your Kutmaster Stockman an older one like this?

Or a newer one, similar to this?

jerryd6818,
mine's styled more like the older one but no shield on the scale and the tang stamp is different (the "usa" is left justified and has a "0" or an "O" to the right), and the blades 'look' like stainless vice carbon, although it's not marked as such.
The detail on the spey blade is very similar to the older which is looks a little different than most of my other stockman knives (stockmen?)

Chief RID,
i know it's a goofy description, sorry about that -- it doesn't rub on/click over the liner nearest the scale, rather the inner one separating the clip from sheepsfoot blades. it does not catch on the liner when closing... just from the sideways pressure when opening. there doesn't seem to be any damage to the edge indicating past interference, either.

thanks,
Andy

Do any of the blades have any wobble when open?

If I understand the problem; the blade rubs the liner when you try to open it.
As you push a thumb nail into the nail nick the blade move sideways and rubs, but after it is opened it does not rub the liner when the blade closes.
Am I understanding the problem correctly?

If I understood the problem; I would ask Chief Rid's question: do that blade wobble when it is open?
If it does the most likely solution is to tighten the blade.

I have seen knives without blade wobble that will rub the liner (or other blades) when opening.
When I have seen this is was due usually to a longer & flexible blade. In that case there was no problem, just that the blade had more flex than it had room to move in the pocket of the frame.

Hope this helps.

blade flex or loose blade if neither of those you're out of luck. This is a common problem on boker 2020 folding hunters, a solid center liner will eliminate the clicking if the design allows the use of a full center liner but it may still rub.

Thanks to all for the input -- since there does not seem to be any wobble when the blade is open, i reckon i'll get used to the click. I really appreciate everyone's responses!
