Check this out. Looks like a old muzzleloader powder measure with funnel. My guess on the pin that comes out of the handle is a flint lock cleaner. Any ideas on how old this might be?

Ballpark, no earlier than the 1970s, probably not much later than the 1980s. I can't tell from the pics if the funnel is something someone mad eup or if the solder is just evidence of a past repair. The pick looks a little small for a touchhole pick for a flinter, might have been intended to clear the nipples on a percussion gun. They are a good piece of kit if you shoot muzzleloaders.

I think I gave $10-12 for my latest measure like this, picked up used at a local gun store. (I keep losing the darn things. . . . )

Hey Guys___had something happen to me,that had never happened before, in my 63 years !!!!_ a gun***__My 25-06 Remington 700BDL,""mis-fired"" !!!!
I was at the range, alone,-----loaded the rifle with 5 rounds,----shot the first round, I ejected the casing,---slid the bolt forward to load the next round,and ""BANG"" she went off without a finger near the trigger !!!!! scared the hell outa' me !!!!! I had the muzzle pointed up,so no harm was done,except for the ""soiled drawers"" !!!!! I shot the remaining (3) rounds,but manually pushed the safety back to on position, after each fire** I came home and read a lot about some mis-fires,on the internet and decided to get a new trigger & safety installed (as I love the rifle)___anyone else had a ""mis-fire"" ?????____the local gunsmith said,someone must have adjusted or tampered with the trigger,before I got it ( I bought the gun in April,used and it's a 1988 model) for this to happen____________I had read that some of the guns fired when the safety was pushed forward ,to the off position,but that never happened to me__I was pushing the bolt forward to re-load***anyway__here is the new trigger & safety (TIMNEY #517 )__have any of you guys replaced triggers,using a Timney ???? results ???__not wanting to start a ""bashing of brands"" just wanting to talk mis-fires- & triggers ____Monk

I've read some stuff about the Remington 700 safeties, but never witnessed that happening myself.
Probably was as the gunsmith stated - someone doing some "trigger work".

Recommended you watch the documentary "Remington Under Fire", it explains the 700's safety issue and even has an interview with the original designer of the gun, who asked to have the issue fixed prior to the guns first production so many years ago, he's like 80-something in the film. I like Remington and I like the 700, but will not hunt around one that has not had the repair made to it, a fix that would have cost Remington only a few pennies had they implemented it prior to the gun being released decades ago. Cubic dollars prevailed and the 700 has caused many deaths and injuries since......sad but true.

**TO ANYONE WITH A REMINGTON 700 - PLEASE WATCH...."Remington Under Fire", the documentary.....and be careful with them 700's!!!

Your mis-fire was caused by an under-build by Remington, not anyone tweaking the trigger. Mike Walker who designed it admits the problem, and even the Navy Seal Sniper Team dropped the gun because of it's problems.

PS____got this Winchester Model 70,270 cal. to back it up___ put a new Weaver scope on it,cause the Simmons that came with it,was no good***

There have been fatalities with the Remington 700. "Remington Under Fire" was devestating in its presentation.
The company denies any problem despite being well aware of the issue.

Although a bit of a hassle, I'd encourage contacting and informing Remington of your experience and contacting your State Consumer Affairs Office within the Attorney General's department. You might also send copies to the gun store where you purchased it as well as other gun stores in your area. In other words raise as big a stink as possible.

I could never pass or sell a rifle like this on to anyone.

I had a Timney adjustable trigger installed on a 77/22 Hornet some years back and I love the trigger and love shooting the rifle.

Timney didn't make an adjustable trigger for that rifle and maybe still doesn't, but I had an extremely competent, ( if hardheaded ) gunsmith at the time who wouldn't use any other.

I'd recommend one to anyone with a factory trigger, to put on a varmint or bench gun.

REPORT !!!!!!______ had the "new " trigger installed this morning*** before removing the "old" trigger,the gunsmith showed me how ,the gun would mis-fire,by bumping the butt on the floor (did it three times in a row !!!!!) WOW!!!!! ___after installing the new trigger ""NO PROBLEMS !!!!!!!""___he told me,someone had adjusted or altered the trigger at some time (factory puts a seal over their in house installed triggers) mine was missing*****___didn't check the old trigger,but the new one was set at ( 36oz. pull ) about 2 1/4 lbs., according to his guage___anyways,I went to the range and she shoots like a "'New Gun""__the new trigger is smooth as silk,and ""NO MIS-FIRES"" _____I got the "straight trigger"" which is a little wider, ---finger tip lays on it just right !!!!!! ____I feel a lot better now !!! __ I would highly recommend the Timney Trigger,if you ever have to replace one***_________________________Monk

hOWDY Men.
Im in the market for a duty pistol for academy training.(Im not shopping here, just looking for advice.) requirements are 9x19 or .40, prefferably 15 round cap. I will need to get a holster and mag pouch as well with two spare mags. I'd like to stay close to $500. I've never used one, but I'm leaning towards a glock 22.

Whadaya think, shooters? any advice is helpful.

Keep in mind that the Glock does not have an external safety and people have been known to shoot themselves in the leg by accident. Have you looked at Gallery of Guns and searched the Gun Genie?

I owned a Beretta 92FS SS for many years......in 9mm. It's nearly a perfect weapon imo. The Glock would be a fine choice as well, as would the Browning Hi-Power. The Browning fits me the best, comes up very naturally and is maybe my favorite.
Do you have a range that rents different weapons? Would be wise to go burn a few hundred rounds through your top choices and then decide.

The Beretta 92fs or M9 would be my choice as well. Make sure you keep it clean and you should never have a problem. You can get a used one for $400-$500.

THE GLOCK 22, OR EVEN G19 WOULD BOTH WORK WELL.
A LOT OF FOLKS ARE MIGRATING TO THE SPRINGFIELD XD AND THE SMITH & WESSON M&P AS WELL.

Glocks dominate law enforcement. One reason for that is when departments look to buy firearms cost is a major factor and Glocks were (I don't know currently.) more economical. I do think Glocks have more accidental discharges than other brands. That is due to the human factor, but since there always is a human factor I prefer an external safety.

Personally I fire the 9 mm. more effectively than the 40. mm. Here I refer primarily to speed.Virtually every major modern firearm is sufficiently accurate. Thus speed of follow up shots becomes a factor for me. And with be best of the newer ammo expansion is is assured.

Perhaps showing my age, I prefer the classic Browning Hi-Power, all steel with express sights and a safety that is a tad larger. I feel that is the perfect combat handgun...for me. It was suggested trying out different firearms you are interested in at a gun range. Very good advice. It is a highly personal choice.
