Well, actually I cut it to the basic shape with an angle grinder with a cut-off blade. (sho nuff throws sparks all over......LOL)
Then I got on my "tinker toy, sample" belt sander and finished the blade to shape.
After that, I clamped the blade blank to the back of an angle with the bed of the sander pitched over to cut the grind on the blade.
This procedure takes a while but works OK I guess.

I'm thinking about upgrading my sander to a larger one. The one I have now uses a 1" x 20" belt.... they wear out pretty quick too.

Yes, thankfully it has walk and talk. This one is my best so far. I showed to my wife and opened and closed it for her.... Then she said, "You want to keep that one don't you.".....LOL. I said yes...... but, I made it for my son so he will get it for Christmas.
The first 2 I made didn't have any talk at all....... SO, they went in the "experience" bin to rest until a later date.

While taking knives apart and studying/fixing them, I noticed some things that would make a huge improvement on what I made from scratch. I made this blade with a square tang area so it would have a "half stop".... so yes, it does have that.

I do need to work on my pining techniques and wood to metal fit. Those things are not as "sharp" as I would like. You can see that in this pic....

This is number 8 so I am getting better..... Not where I want to be BUT I am getting better.

Here is a pic of my first..... I was embarrassed so not pics were posted until now...

IF and I say again IF... things go like I hope, I should be able to get started on my next project Sunday... (see link).

You've got absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. I doubt any cutlers' first knives from scratch were heirloom quality, if ya learn a lil bit from every one...you're well on your way to where ya appear to wanna go
