Latest wood working project....

I’m no Norm Abrams or Roy Underhill by any means, but I’ve recently started a bit of woodworking and have really been enjoying it. My wife got me this repro Ithaca shotgun advertising sign for Christmas and I decided to make a display for it. I found some ideas on line where folks were making these “crate side” looking displays for pictures and signs and thought I’d try one.

The boards are 3/4’ thick and the whole thing was made from one 2x4 pine stud that had been sitting on my shop floor for about a year. Here are some pictures of the process and the final product. Thanks for looking!

First I used the table saw to cross cut the 2x4 into three pieces the length that I needed they ripping the rounded edge off them to help with the resawing.

Then I resawed the 2x4 pieces to make them thinner and checked my lay out.

Then I glued everything up, flattened and distressed with a belt sander, used a router to round ove the edge and make some more distressed places on the edge, then sanded with the random orbital sander.

To attach the sign and make it look something like a crate side I made these styles and cut a rabbet in them the heights of the sign thickness so it could slide in and out, then drilled some “nail holes” in them.

After staining and final assembly, here’s the finished product.

Thanks! I love my Ithacas. Here’s a pic I took a few years ago. Dad and I were rabbit hunting on my grandma’s farm. This is when we were loading up.

The gun in the left is my 1948 16 gauge and the one on the left was dad’s 20 gauge from 1963 iirc.

You need a Compound Miter Saw. (Yeah, yeah, I know. Ya gotta do with what ya got.)

Now you’re talking! I love 16 gauge Ithacas! The 20’s and 16’s are my favorites.

I have a craftsman compound miter saw. It gets used quite a bit, they are pretty handy. For the bigger stuff I also have a radial arm saw. I know they aren’t popular as they once were, but I really love mine.

Colonel, i am impressed that you turned a 2x4 stud into a fine looking frame for your sign. I think most people would of purchased some 1x4 or similar but you did the extra work of transforming the 2x4 into the dimensions you needed. The stain really brings out the grain and makes it look great.

Wow! Thank you for the kind words, but you could fit what I know in thimble and have room left over.

A 1x4 would have been taken fewer steps for sure, but I’d have had to bought them and lumber is crazy high right now. I already had this 2x4, sooooo presto chango it became 3/4 inch boards.

To get the color I used a pre stain as pine doesn’t stain well if you don’t use a pre stain. The color is minwax honey. Now that it is completely dry I’m going to give it a couple coats of an oil finish.

Man, you are right - lumber is expensive right now.

I found a local guy who makes live-edge tables, counter tops, bar tops, etc. He cuts the ends off and does'nt use them, so he sold me a few. They will make good bowl blanks to turn. I will put some pics on the lathe thread.
